The gentleman in question was Mr Thomas Cumming, and he died while on a visit to the farm of Mr George Young; Mr Cumming, who lived at Avenal, went to West Plains yesterday morning and remained there daring the day. He had dinner at Mr Young’s and afterwards went to assist in some veterinary work, Mr Andrew Dunlop being in attendance to superintend the operations. Mr Cumming seemed to be in excellent health'and spirits after his ineal, but' when he entered the yard Mr Young noticed that he was white almost as a sheet. Suddenly he put his hands to his knees and fell to the ground. Mri’/SJoung called to Mr Dunlop and the Mr Cumming out of the yard, but it is believed that life was extinct as soon as he fell. The body was at'once conveyed to the deceased’s late residence- at Avenal. ’ Dr /Galbraith has' certified, tha,t ; Mr Cumming was suffering, from heart disease, and to that ailment lie attributes death, a fact ■which ,may render an inquest unnecessary,; Mr Cumming leaves a widow but no family. - ’ ' . .; Alleged-. Corner ” In Cheese.—Oetze and Gerritsen’s representative in Wellington States that an interview with his principal, in Sydney, mentioned in Thursday’s cable' messages, is notquite correct. Mr Gerritsen proposes to almost abandon the New Zealand cheese trade for the reasons, given in the message, but his butter operations will not be interfered with.; On the contrary business in the latter branch is being largely extauded. He states that speculators have bought up half the output of cheese from Southern, factories,- and have l thus created “a- corner.”r r ;Froni this it is plain that New Zealand cheese is of such quality as to make it eagerly sought after.

Caught l and Caged.— A. Wendonside farmer mimed Charles George Thurston was brought to In vercargill yesterday by Constable Mayne, of Waikaia, to undergo a sentence of fourteen days’ imprisonment in defaultofpayment of a fine of L2 and ‘costs, for having assaulted a neighbour named Jolih'Ckmeron. It appears that Mr Thurston was rather difficult to capture, and thaf- it; was only with the assistance of two other members of the police force]- and by the exercise of caution, circumspection, and , strategy .. that Constable Mayne at last secured his man, Mr Thurston’s residence is so .situated .that .anyone approaching can be seen miles away, and this advai.tige enabled him to escape the first time Constable Mayne essayed his arrest. On the second occasion, however, 7 • the house was stealthily 'approached'- in’tiledark by Sergeant Fleming and Constables Mayne and Keaney, who posted themselves round the house aud patiently awaited daylight:' The outhouses 'Were first 'searched . arid then the dwelling stormed, but it was only after threats of breaking down the doors that any response catne Jrmn within. Eventually Mr . He then kindly consented ty. accompany Constable Mayne ••jo' Invercargill, although he expressed a decided and emphatic opinion that the proceedings werAirtegular and even illegal.
