Mayoral Elections.

Yesterday’s election of a gentleman to. occupy the Mayoral chair of Invercargill for the ensuing year was conducted decorously and without the faintest symptom of ill-feol-ing or irritation. It, is true that the adherents of each of the four candidates worked zealously , in support of their respective causes, but they also worked with the utmost good humour and in the best possible spirit. Cabs were flying about town during most of the day bringing voters to the poll, and other efforts were put forth on.behalf of the candidates, the election, in fact, having the accompaniments usual on such occasions. The poll closed at 6.p.m. and -half an hour afterwards the Town Clerk (Mr J. E. Hannah) announced the result. The subjoined figures show that 575 votes were recorded out of a possible 894 : — A. Raeside ... ... ... 225 A. Blacke .i. 180 D. McFarlane ... 126 A. Storie ... 40 Mr Raeside therefore had a majority over Mr Blacke of 45 and was declared duly elected. Each of the candidates addressed the ratepayers who had assembled to hear the result of the poll, and each bore testimony to the fact that the election had been conducted withthe greatest possible harmony and with not even an approach to unpleasantness. Mr Macara was returned for Gore, beating two older residents, and former Mayors. The figures were ;— ’ Macara.,. 134 Beattie 116 Simson , 82 Mr Macara was declared elected and returned thanks for the honour.conferred. Mr Simson said he did not grudge Mr Macara the honour.
