Wallace County Council.

Wednesday, 22nd November. At the annual meeting of the Council the Returning Officer intimated that Messrs Basstian and Mitchell had been elected for Mararoa riding; Messrs Grant and Newton for Wairio ;Mr J. C. Ellis for Waiau ; Mr A. M. Carmichael forOtautau ; Messrs Hare and Hamilton for Aparima ; and Mr Hirst for Orepuki. Councillors Ellis and Hirst were not present. On the motion of Councillor Newton, seconded by Councillor Carmichael, Councillor J. W. Hamilton was elected Chairman for the year, and he was also elected the Council’s representative on the Southland H. andC. A. Board ;.Councillor Basstian on the Southland Hospital Trust; Councillor Hare on the Wallace and Fiord Hospital Trust, and., Mr W. J. Marsh on the Arrow Hospital Trust. The followingcommittees were appointed: —Councillors Haro, Hamilton, Ellis and Hirst to be the Finance Committee—Councillor Hare to be chairman; Councillors Carmichael; Hirst and the chairman to be the Contract Committee. if . Chief Surveyor wrote.intimating that L 350 had been voted by Parliament for a stock bridge over*the Oreti.at Mossburn and that if this sum were subsidised £ for £ he believed a traffic bridge could be built, ana asking what proportion the Council will contribute.—Councillors expressed surprise that no communication had been received re a vote for the bridge at Otautau and asked why the bridge at Mossburn should be pushed on and the bridge at Otautau overlooked. It was agreed that consideration of subsidising the bridge at Mossburn be held in abeyance, and that information be requested as to the Government’s proposals re vote for the bridge at Otautau. The New Zealand Pine Company were granted permission to lay a tramway along roadline to the jetty to be constructed at Colac Bay. . , ~ . The Resident Engineer in icply, stated the Railway Department would supply 100 cubic yards of gravel free on trucks at Orepuki; the same to be spread on that portion of the street extending from the entrance gate of the station to the boundary between the statiomaster’s house and the police station. Robert Tapper, junr., called attention to the dangerous state of the road at Limestone Gorge, especially just above the caves.— Engineer to confer with the member for the riding and get the repairs effected. J. and T. McKay, Centre Hill, complained that nothing had been done to the road leading to their sections, as they have still to. pack everything in or out on horseback.— Received. Peter Allen, Feldwick, stated that the road adjoining his land had been damaged by the flood, and that he was willing to give land for a road if required.—Received. Lawrence Forde objected to the closing of the road at Heddon Bush as requested by J. Tennant.—Received. T. O’Donnell requested the Council to refund the fine imposed about two and a half years ago in connection with works in s Waiau riding.—Received. Colonel Chalmers wrote that he approved of the new road from Sharpridge to Nightcaps as laid off by the engineer.—The Engineer stated that the plan would soon be ready. Hugh Beggs requested the Council to come to some arrangement re road through section .114, Bellemont, as the present tract was not on the roadline, and he wished to fence.— Engineer to report re the possibility of making a road on the flat, and whether it would be improved by changing it to terrace; also, that the engineer arrange with Mr Beggs to keep the traffic open. Jas. Taylor asked leave to remove a part of a road at Clarksville for mining purposes. —Left to engineer to deal with. Extention of time for completing the bridge at Thornbury was granted to Mr Boyd. Mr McGillivray waited on the Council and stated that a charge of 31s for burying a horse was excessive.—The matter to be inquired into. The Chairman presented a petition from settlers at Pahi requesting that the road leading from the main road to the gravel pit be put in repair.—Received. Councillor Hare presented a petition from John Mclntyre and others asking that certain roads in Aparima riding may have careful consideration, and suggesting that the Council should appoint a commission to examine and report on the same—Councillor Hare gave notice of motion : That the engineer report to the next meeting of the Council as to the amount spent on the roads mentioned, and as to urgent work required. Councillor Hare presented a petition from 68 ratepayers praying that no money be expended in purchasing land for a road through Mr F. Sutton’s as proposed by the former Council.—Councillor Hare gave notice that he would move at next meeting that the resolution accepting Mr Sutton’s offer be rescinded. Councillor Newton presented a petition from M. Crean and others asking that the money for their district be expended in bridging Morley creek instead of gravelling. —Engineer to report whether another ford is obtainable. Councillor Newton presented two petitions from settlers in Taringatura prayiug for works to be done. —Engineer to report. The sum of Ll 5 was voted to make the road leading to the bridge over Duck Creek. The balance sheet, duly certified by the Auditor, was laid on the table and adopted. J. Horr waited on the Council re road to Longwood. The old track was nob available as the hind had been fenced in and they were completely shut in until a track was cut on the road line.—lt was agreed that tenders be called for the work, a vote to be passed at next meeting. The Council then adjourned.
