Cable News.— Deeming will try a new line of defence. His counsel will assert that Krnily Mather is still alive aad that the woman whose body was found under the hearth in Windsor might have been murdered b'.forc he came to Melbourne. This will not fit in with his purchase of cemeut^ shovel and bucket nor with the sounds ol bricklaying while he tenanted the house. The items dealing with Anarchists are " too numerous to particularise," but Paris ia in a. state of siege, awaiting the advent of summer. Some one has been telling British invstors all about us and our evil waysmuch of it being very obscure at this end of the line. A motion to the effect that each national section of the United Kingdom should have home rule has been defeated. Emm Pasha has had bad luck in Central Africa and is returning to the coast a sick man. Mossbi'kn. — The school committee elected for this district are Messrs Dyer (chairman), Williamson (secretary), Beer, McAuley, and Anderson. Unclaimed Letters. — Letters from places beyond the colony addressed as follows, were received at the Post Office, Invercargill, during the month of February, and were unclaimed on the 30th April :— F. K. Lewis, F. Lcwc. Stkkkt Prkachinc. — The reference made to this matter at the last meeting of the Borough Council lias had some effect. Ou Saturday evening the Salvation Army held their open-air service some distance up Don street, and in this way avoided giving cause for complaint to business people. Cihtrcii ok England. — The first ordination service in Southland will be held on Friday next at 1 1 o'clock in St. John's Church, when the Bishop of Dunedin will admit a candidate for the deaconate, who will probably be appointed to the Riverton district. The Bishop will also conduct a special service on Friday evening in St. John's on the occasion of the annual harvest festival. Hospital Returns. — In-patients remaining from last week, 11 males and 4 females ; admitted during the week, 2 males and 3 females ; discharged during the week, 1 male and 3 females ; remaining in the institution, 11 males and 4 females; outpatients treated duiing the week, 13 males and 12 females ; died (Peter Mentiplay). The secretary desires to acknowledge, with thanks, receipt of L 2 2s from " A Friend " per Fred. W. Wade, Esq. The visiting trustees for the week are — Messrs W r . R. Riddell and C. Basstian, senr. Eaknk.d by a Little Kindness. — Sergt. O' Donovan was recently removed from Stafford, Westland, to Waipawa. The Chinese at Stafford have, through the local postmaster, sent him a complimentary letter and several presents of Chinese manufacture for himself and his wife. The letter is in Chinese, but a translation is attached, and this says: — " They hope you will accept their kindest wishes for the future, and that you may be happy and prosperous. And they also hope you will sometimes think of the Chinamen with a kindly feeling, who though they are of a different race, have hearts to feel friendship and judge an honest, kind-hearted man, and such you have proved to them. They now sign themselves your faithful Chinese friends." Sp(:k<;kon's Skkmons. — The death of the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon will not, it would seem, lead to the discontinuance of " The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit." Mr Spurgeon, when he was well, preached three times a week, and all his discourses, we learn from the Phonetic Journal, were taken down in shorthand by Mr Thomas Allen Reed and members of his stafl. As only one sermon has usually been published weekly, there are consequently enough sermons in manuscript to allow of the publication of a weekly sermon for the next ten or twelve years. The series commenced in 18.33 ; there have been '2'2-i\ sermons published ; and the largest, number of one discourse sold was 200,000. Tiik Wind and the Weatheucock. — The Premier's Wellington organ is very wroth with Mr*!. Hutchison because he "deserted his party/ We (Kveniug Press) have never been admirers of the hon. member for Waitorara, but it does seem to us a piece of most consummate effrontery for the Hon. Mr Ballanee's newspaper to hold Mr Hutchison up to ridicule because "he left the (Jovernment and his party." How many times has the Hon. Mr Ballance left his party ? Did he not come into Parliament as a steadfast supporter of Sir Harry (then Major) Atkinson? Did he not, in the first speech that he delivered, in his tirst electioneering campaign, heap vituperation on the'de voted head of Sir (ieoige drey? Did he not, after all thi3, desert the Atkinson party and become a colleague of Sir George Grey, whom lie had so bitterly reviled? i)id Dot Sir George suspect his Colonial Treasurer of plotting against him, and did not Mr Ballanco leave the Cabinet on terms of deadly enmity with his chief? Did not Mr Ballance enter Parliament as an ardent Freetrader ? Is he not now 6 rabid Protectionist ? Did lie not, until a few years ago, fight tooth and nail for secular education, and is he not now a staunch advocate of denominationalism.

EuENnALE.--MrTennyson Smith delivered 1 is temperance lecture " The trial of a no- ' orious criminal " in the hall at Edendale on Thursday to a fair audience, although the light was wet. At the close ,'j(i signed the emperance pledge and '22 signified their mention to join a good templar lodge should me be started in the locality. This, if initituted, will make the seventh lodge that iaa come into existence in connection with VJr Smith's mission in this district. The Pkiok of Bkkf. — A correspondent writes : — " There may be a necessity to raise the price of mutton because of the demand for sheep for freezing, but there is no justification at all for increasing the price of beef. Cattle young and old are almost a drug iv the market. To increase the price of beef by combination, deserves a very divisive condemnation. Why, for a mouth past there has been a continuous drop from week to week in the value of fat cattle in the Dunedin market, the last being 10s to 15s a head, while there was nothing in the local market reports to indicate that beef is advancing in price." A Prompt Rescue. — A son of Mr Geo. Clare had a very narrow escape from drowning on Saturday afternoon. He was in a boat with his father, and when a short distance from the jetty overbalanced and fell into the harbour. Mr Clare, who fortunately is quite at home in water, dived in after his son, and managed to g^.t hold of him. The boy, who was by this time unconscious, was brought ashore and taken to a house near by. "Here his father brought his knowledge of the means to be adopted in such emergencies into requisition, and soon had the satisfaction of seeing the little chap coming round. Medical assistance had meanwhile been sent for, but by the time this was available the steps so energetically and skilfully taken had proved successful, and the little fellow was rapidly recovering from the effects of Ins immersion. Satckdav Niciit Train" to tiik Bu'kk. — On Saturday his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Bain) and the Town Clerk (Mr Scandrett) had an interview with Mr Hannay, one of the Railway Commissioners, relative to the resolution passed by the Borough Council asking that the Saturday night train to YVoodend should run through to the Bluff. His Worship said a letter would, of course, be sent to the Commissioners in Wellington, but he availed himself of the opportunity afforded by Mr Hannay's visit to put the views of the Council and many other persons before him. He was assured that the public desired Lhe convenience asked for, ami that it would be availed of to the profit of the Department. Mr Hannay replied that he would bo in Wellington in about ten days' time, wh^n the Commissioners would no doubt consider the request. In the meantime he would cause inquiries to be made. His Worship thanked Mr Hannay for his promiso to give consideration to the views submitted. Salevaros Company. — The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Invercargill Saleyards Company wa3 held in the Prince of Wales Hotel on Saturday, Mr J. Turnbull, chairman of directors, presiding. The report and balance-sheet were taken as read, and adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr C. Basstian, senr. — The. report congratulated shareholders on the improved position of the Company's affairs, the yard dues for last year showing an increase of LoO 6s 9d on those of the previous twelve months. It also mentioned that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the South Frozeu Meat Company for an extension of their, lea?e at an increased rental, and altogether, the report concluded, the prospects of the Saleyards Company were better than the^ had been for years. — The retiring directors (Messrs J. Turnbnll, C. Basstiiin, and H. Carswell) were re-elected, and Mr T. Perkins was reappointed auditor. — Attention was called to the fact that complaints had been made that owing to the increase in the quantity of stock otli-rod at the yards during the autumn season the sales were not got through in daylight. It was also seated that the accommodation was not sufficient. After .i short discussion it was suggested that the auctioneers should be asked to hold weekly sales in futurft during the busy sc.ison, as in past years, instead of fortnightly as at present. — The proceedings then closed.
