Lease of Pastoral Buns

The leases of seventeen runs — four in the County of Southland and thirteen in that of Wallace — were submitted to competition in the Supreme Court room at noon yesterday. There were about 100 persons in attendance, the pastoral interest being well represented, and great interest was evinced in the proceedings. The sale was conducted by the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr G. VV. Williams) who in reading. the_ conditions of lease explained that except in one case the term — 10 years — was an absolute one, the Crown not reserving any right of resumption before the end of that period. The {exception was in the case of the Manipouri run, but from the nature of the country it was not likely that the land would be resumed before the expiry of the ten years. Bids were then invited, and in less than half an hour the whole of the leases had been disposed of, falling in each case into the hands of the present lessees. Ten of the runs were secured at the upset rentals, but 198 a, part of Dunrobin, was run up from L 66 6a 8d to L 156, when the gentleman who was bidding against Mr Basstiap quietly remarked " I'm done," and left it to the oW lessee. The same resultjfollowed the competition for run 198 c, which from an upset of Ll7 10s, was re-leased for L 43.
