The barque Cooleen takes her departure for London this morning. Owing to the arrival of the Hawkes Bay the tug Awarna did not go to Stewart Island yesterday. The Tyser Line steamer Hawkes Ray arrived yesteiday from Wangam.i which port she left; at 1 a.m. on Monday. She anchored off the Point about 10 a.m. and shortly after high water was taken up and berthed at the wharf at 5 p.m. The Hawkes Bay is the largest steamer that has visited this port, her dimensions being length (over all) 408 feet, beam 48 feet, "depth of hold 32ft. 6in. This gives a gross toiiuage for measurement of 4583 or a register of 2959 tons. The hull is partitioned off by substantial bulkheads and is double bottomed to the extent of 1072 tons for the storage of water ballast. The engines are on the triple expansion system and are of 2500 horse power effective. The daily consumption of coal is from 30 to 32 tons, which gives her a speed of 10 knots. There is storage space for 65,000 carcases of mutton besides a large quantity of sundries. The vessel is lighted throughout by electricity. Captain J. 0. Felgate is in command and has with him Mr J. Fenlon, as chief officer, Mr Russell, 2nd, Mr F. Ledstone, 3rd; chief engineer, Mr W. Dobie, 2nd, Mr J. Lee. The Hawkes Bay takes from here about 22,500 carcases mutton— lo,ooo from J. G.
