PIRATES v. STAR. A match took place on the Union Ground yesterday between the above clubs, before a good number of spectators. The match waa arranged in aid of the Welsh relief fund, and does not count for the premiership. Hughes captained the Star, and Mcßobie the Pirates, and two spells of 40 minutes ' each were agreed upon. The latter kicked off, and after about 15 minutes' play the Star forwards got on a rush which resulted in Hamiltoa scoring first blood, but the kick afc goal failed. There waa no further scoring in this spell, although both teams were hard pressed on several occasions. In the scrum and line out the Pirates were superior, but in passing and loose play their oppenenta were far and away the better. In the second spell Hamilton secured another try, but i although the kick waa in front of the posts the ball went wide. Shortly afterwards Ramsay, who played a good game, made a fine run and carried the ball right behind the Pirates' posts, but on being tackled lost possession of it. B. Bain, however, pounced on the leather, and secured the third try. The kick at goal was again a failure. There waa no further scoring and the match ended— Star, 3; Pirates, nil. The game was played in a friendly upirit, but some players in both sides persisted in having their little nay on nearly every decision given by the umpires and referee. This is a practice that should certainly be Btoppcd now, as it tends to cause not only an unfriendly feeling between the officials and players, but also to bring the game into disrepute amongst the onlookers. After the game both teams were mustered and Mr John Kiugsland, senr. (on behalf of the Welsh Relief Fund Committee) thanked them for the help they had given the fund, and stated that the sum of L 4 10s 3d had been collected at the gate by Messrs Read, F. McDonald and hvmself.
