Southland High School Sports

«. The annual gathering which marks the advent of the holiday season for the pupila of the Southland Boys' High School took place in the Park Reserve yesterday afternoon, when a programme of sixteen events, comprising running, leaping, and vaulting was successfully carried out. •' Our boys were favoured, to make up for last year's unpleasant experiences, with superb weather, and the sports were carried out under the most favourable conditions. In Mveral of the races there were very large fields, and in every instance the competitions were entered into with the zest peculiar to youth. Applause in liberal measure greeted the victors in race or jump, and the eagerness with which the juvenile section of the onlookers hastened at the close of each event to compare the results with past achievements indicated the lively interest taken in the con* I tests, gome very £Qod lorn WW displayed jq

thejumpingandvaulting.theobstaclerace furnished a great deal of fun. and the majority of the races were of an interesting character. The one in which the old boys of the school took part brought out three competitors and ended in one of the closest and most exciting finishes of the day. W. Harvey, who was third, came up with a rush at the hnish, but lost some ground through being accidentally kicked by one of the other runners. The mile race, for a cop given by the Invercargill Football Club, was also a very good bit of work, not the least noticeable feature being the pluck displayed by Jf. Fraser, the smallest of the trio who remained in to the end. Messrs \. H. High ton and J. C. Col beck discharged the duties of judges and Mr H. L. Fowler thoße of starter, while Mr W. Macalister acted as timekeeper, and everything passed off smoothly and pleasantly. Subjoined are the results of the different events : — 100 yards race— A. McNab, 1; J. Graham, 2 ; W. dcott, 3.
