Tb« Haifa are all sweet with hay, The brakes are all blithe with song, On the hedges rosn garlands sway, CbovolTolas clusters throng, As Bb«tlees, and tattered, and grimy, and gray, He shuffles along. A skylark flings high above, A thrash from yon hanging bough, Faifaway ie the wood a dove ; Bat he pa-s s With f cowling brow. Their melodies once be was wont to love ; He hates them now. Hate? all, save the sheltering night, When under a bank he creeps, And pqaalor uoat of sight, And hunger it* distance keeps. And tuunocked by the birds and tke meadows blight, His misery sleeps;
