The Education Institute.
.«. (By Telei;rath. ) Auckland, Jan. 9. The Institute to-day passed & resolution affirming the desirableness of establishing a teachers' benefit society, and decided that the next meeting of the council should begin in Christchurch on January sth, 1892. Officers were elec f ed as follows for the ensuing term : — President, Mr Scott (Christchurch) ; secretary, Mr Worthington ; treasurer, Mr Grundy ; special members of the executive — Messrs D. White (Dunedin), McMorran, and Watson (Wellington). Thanka were paved to the Minister of Edu-
cation and secretary of the department for I their careful consideration of the Institute's recommendations. The Council have resolved to form a fund for providing legal assistance to teachers who are members and who require help of that kind. The following resolution was also agreed to: — "That the attention of the Minister of Education be called to the alleged unnecessary multiplication of schools in several educational districts ; to the withdrawal from the maintenance fund of large sums of money for achool Imiidiug purposes ; and to the consequent hardship to teachers in the serious diminution of salaries. "
