As to 17th Century Calvinism in Relation to Present-day Matters

♦ TO THE EDITOK. Sib, — I find no fault with "Scrutator" for writing anonymously, about a subject of which the interest is not personal. On the other hand, I request him to excuse me for not entering into discussion with him, either as to the merits of the evangelical doctrine of original sin, or. as to the subject of my letter, so far as referred to by him, namely, my proposed proof that the Westminster Confession has not a doctrine of " infant damnation." The facts in the letter, which you did me the favour to publish, appear to me an proof conclusive on that point. Hay ing intimated my opinion of their value, as thus relevant illustration of the state of Calvinistic opinion in the Reformation Churches at and before the time of^ Westminster Assembly, I leave the facts to speak for themselves, to readers who of course will not blindly accept my opinion of their value. In addreSßing the general public at present, by means of that letter and otherwise, what I mainly wish to accomplish is, an exhibition of the nature of the ground that was assumed by those Christian forefathers, to the inevitable effect of {exposure of certain assaults that are made on the now professed belief of certain churches. The relative position of some of us is further illustrated by the overture and statement incloßed, which were this day laid before the Presbytery of Oamaru. If you place these before your readers, that will further oblige, yours etc., James MacGkkook. Oamaru, 12th March, 1890.
