The House rssumed at 7.30 p.m. Sir G. Grey moved — That in the opinion of this House it is not desirable that house allowance sho.uld be paid to any Minister who does not reside at the seat of Government. — Sir H. Atkinson said the allowance was made to Ministers in lieu of personal allowauce. — Mr Ballance could not agree with the last speaker. There had been a Ministerial residence empty in Wellington at the disposal of ths AttorneyGeneral had he chosen to reside in Wellington instead of in his own house in Auckland. —Motion ' agreed to on the voices. Mr Samuel moved the second reading of the Divorce Extension Amendment Bill, briefly explaining the provisions of the bill, which was similar to the measure introduced on several previous occasions. The same, power was given to a wife to petition for divorce as that now possessed by the husband. Wife or husband might marry again after desertion of seven years or imprisonment for criminal offence : for seven years. — Mr Fish opposed the bill. Atkinson denied that he had initiated the correspondence. He" regretted nothing he had written but regretted its cause, which was a disgrace to the colony. — Mr Fisher moved that the papers be referred to the Printing Committee. — Carried by 39 to 36. The House went into Committee of Supply for the further consideration of the Estimates. Class 13 — A lengthy discussion ensued on the Volunteer vote and progress was reported.
