Fortrose Caledonian Society

The above Society held their annual gathering on the 2nd inst. in a padaouk close to the township, and placed at tbeir disposal by Mr Jamea K'ernan. The day was very tine and.tbe gathering large. Tne committee spared no pains to make the meeting successful, and there were many improvements on former year§. The running ground was enclosed and this kept the spectators from intruding dnring the various competitions. The sports were keenly contested and the results seemed to give satisfaction. There was plenty of racing for the young folke, who roiled up in great numbers, no luss than twenty running at one time. A dancing platform was provided and throughout the afternoon jrhe lads and lasses footed it right merrily to the enlivening strains of Mr Shirley'? violin. Nor wera the jba^pipas wanting, Mr J. MtKay providing that soul-stirring (lov«d at a distance) music. Mr McCann dispensed refreshments, and the day being warm did a good trade. The takings at the gates amounted to LlO which will belp the Society o good bit as hitherto they have had no revenue from that source. The annual ball ia connection with the gathering was held in ttie evening and a very large number of ladies and gentlemen were present. The ball committee did all in their power to make it a pleasant affair and well they succeeded.
