Hussars Review and Sports.

The annual review of the Southland Hua«arß was held yesteiday afternoon, together with the races, sports, and competitions which iie uauaily eupe aided with a view of creating an interest in the proceedings and affording some attractiou to the general pub.ic, Tt,e Park Resrve was the|Bcene oil action, aud with beauiiful weather acd a half holiday for ihd occasion the proceedings i ugbt to have been in ev<-ry way successful. That the success achieved was only of a medium decree wan no doubt attributable to tn:smanaj<enjent, for certainly tha proceedings were dreary and woiiiywhat uninteresting to the majority of ihe spectators however much tiio Hussars tht-mselvea may have been pleaded and interested. rim first rvent w<ts, of course th-j review, and ia this the members of the corps acquitted themselves remarkably woll. They in irehed, trotted, rantered, galloped, and charged past the Reviewing Officer, iMirpr Thomson, in capital stylo, 'ooking and acting as cavalry should. Major Thomson complimented the m*:n after the review, stating that this year's truining under Dr lllnstructor Fr.iser had bten the most successful the Hnssars had undergone since tho formalion of the corps, and explaining the. advantages they derived from going into camp. This, the eorious business of the day having been dispo-ad of the competitions and sports commenced. The first item was a contest among the troopers for the honour of presenting for the insppction of the judges — Major Thomson, Captain Kohn and Honorary-Trooper Orosbio — the best turnout : man, horee, and everything. The first prizy was awarded to Sergeant Wohlman and the second to Trooper Spencer, the entries being eight in num- | ber. The Hurdle Race followed, and was | won by Sergeant Brunton'a Brisk ; the other starters being Trooper Preston's Fidget, and Surgeon Gloss's Hazel, The sword competition between town and country squads was an event which was watched with considerable interest, and when the judges, Captain W. B. Heywood and Lieut Ross, awarded the honours to the town representatives their decision was generally endorsed. It may be men-. tioned that neither squad was particularly efficient, a fact which Captain Hey. wood did not forget to emphasise when announcing the decision of his colltague and himself. For the Cavalry Flat R«se three horsea started, and after a capital race Trooper Trumble's Maori won by a head, witu. Trooper McLeod's Al second, and Trooper Aldred's Sivagger(late Dandy) a bad third. Fourteen of the men entered for the tilting, and the contest was of the' usual nature. Eventually the first place was awarded to Trooper Porter (Wyndham), no second prize being given. Tne Hack Race which followed was the bast event of the day, and had -the other contests been equally well managed and as expeditiously arranged the success of the proceedings would have been greater. There were eight starters for the race, and trooper^ McKenzie's Regard passed the post first with Trooper Ho well's Playboy in fairly close attendance. This concluded the sports, the lateness of the hoar preventing the completion of the programme. The officers of the other town Volunteer corps wore present, znd the Garrison Band discoursed some excellent ; paste.
