, .Friday, 12th March. '■'■■■■ The monthly meeting was attended! by the Chairman (Mr O. v. W. Hast), and Oounjcillors Baldey, Dtmlop, Black, Shand, Mac- ' Gibbon, Shanks, and Richardson. Before proceeding with the ordinary business, the fallowing special order was made on the motion of Councillor Baldeyj seconded - by Councillor Shanks :— "That the prayer of the petition of the Board end ratepayers of the New Biver Road District be, given effect to, and that the said Road Board be dissolved and the road district merged in the Southland County on and after the 9th April) 1886." ' A number of ratepayers in the Cbatton die trict wrote asking for^ Borne work to the c itches and culverts on the road past the Chatton public school. — The Engineer reported that the work was very necessary, but tbe cost would be heavy as gravel could not be easily obtained. — Councillor Mac Gibbon said he would go as far as the riding's funds would permit, and would move that £100 be voted fcr the most necessary works. — The motion was seconded by Councillor Baldey and carried. The Tuterau Road Board asked that aubsides of £10 and £100 be granted for works on CubbiDs road and Crawforda road respectively. — On tbe motion of Councillor MacGibbon tha £10 for Cubbins road was granted, but the other application wrb de« clined, the Council deciding to adhere to a previous resolm ion by which LSO was voted for Crawfords road on condition that tbe Board contributed £25. Samuel Sullivan wrote asking that the Biufi-Invercargill road be repaired. It had been greatly cut up by the waggons, and the cettlera had consequently been the principal sufferers from £be dispute between the merchants and the Railway Department.-*— On the motion of Councillor Dunlop it was resolved to vote a sum of money to enable an extra surfaceman to be put on. A. Swhan asked that a bridle track be made to his property at Slopedown. — It was resolved to refer the application to the local Boad Board. Tbe County sloicitor (Mr F. W Wade) forwarded his opinion io regard to the making and maintenance of railway crossings. After cartful consideration he had come to the conclusion that the Government could not be compelled to make and maintain crossings on roads which bad not been surveyed at the time the line was made. — Received. J. G. Killoh requested the Council to instiuct ths engineer to proceed with the works on the Wycdham-Otaria road, co t'sat he. might be able to close the dotted track ihiougb his property. -Jt was stated that tbe work would be gone on with, immediaiely. F. Da^ysdrew attention to the bad state of tbe road running through block 7, Wen don, ai;d asked that some formation be doDe° — Inspector to report. M. Miles asked that a culvert be put in on road leading through block 8, Wendon.— ln» spector to report. The Railway Department reported that Eichard Howells was now busy removing bis buildißgs from the County road at Lowther. W. B. Tait forwarded his resignation as Banger for the w a:aciwad;s'.ricr.— Accepted, Thirteen ratepayers in Harewood township wrote HBking that an outlet should be found to carry away a quantity of stagnant water which had accumulated near their properties, They were willing to contribute half the coat, — Referred to the Engineer. The Park School Committee requested the Council to vote a sum for gravelling the walk on Kelvin road, leading to the school. Ihe ether looai bodies had been asked to contri. Bute towards the cost. — On the motion of Councillor DunTbp the sum of £10 was voted for the work on condition that the remainder of tho probable cost be contributed by the other local bodies interested. John Tennant drew attention to the bad state of the vVinton-Wreys Bush road near Glacifield.-Ttte Eugineer stated that tbe contractor was at work on part of the road referred to, The Chairman reported, that in accordance with the request of the ratepayers all the necessary steps had been taken to close the old road line on section 6a, Waimuaia district. W. Martin and others wrote asking for repairs to the Oteramika ioad between the cud of the last contract and Sutherland's property,— The Bum of £20 wag voted for the work. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce requested the Council 'a co-operation in urging tha Government to arrange for the landing of the mails per the direct steamers at the Bluff.— Request granted. The Property JTax D~epartmeot intimated that a voucher had been forwardnd to tha Treasury for payment to Ihe Council of the sum of £376, being an advance of 76 per cent, on account of subsidy upon rates col* lected by the Council over land in tha Ia» vercargill Road District, W, Martin aud others petitioned to have 4 road opened from Oteraraika road to the Seawara Buth railway between blocks 19 and, 22, Invercargill Hundred.—Engiaeer to re"« port. lbs Gfcaria Road Boavd applied for subsU dies for Ihrte roads within iheir district.— The sum of £20 wrs vot^d for the road from the schoolhouse to Patterson's oorner,and & similar sura for the road from Burke't to D, Andrew's property, As the result.of inquiries made, Councillor" Shanks withdrew the motion of which he bad given notice for the rescinding of the: present appointment of slaughter yard in« peotor for *a vercargill and Dacre. James Murray complained that the con* tractnr for work at Ot&t.ra Bush had interfered with his fence in clearing the road line.— Referred to Eugiaeer. Tbe Lumsden Cemetery Trustees applied for a subsidy for forming a drain, planting trees and otherwise improving the cemetery, —Held over, enquiry to be made as to whether the Council had any power to vote money for such purposes. The N.Z. and Australian Land 00. wrote asking the Council to close the road on the south boundary of section 15, block 3, Lothian district, they (the Company) paying all the statutory expenses on condition that the road closed be given to them in lieu of ths other road already opened, — Request granted on tbe motion of Councillor Bichardeon, The Gore Municipal Council forwarded plans and specifications of propoaed'works fa Broughton street, and rt quested the Council to contribute thereto in terms of the statute, —It waa resolved, on the motion of Councillor Shanks— "That this Council finds that the road referred to as requiring to ba con. structed is of no present service to the county, and ths Council fails to s'-e tbe occasion for contributing to such work, and would request to be provided with the Municipal Council's estimate of the cost, and an explanation of the grounds upon which they considered the work necessary to the county." W. Henderson wrote on behalf of several Matftura settlers objecting to the appointment of -lames Young as pound-keeper and ranger in their district. — Hanger to bs informed of the complaints for his future guidance. Accounts amountiug to £4409 6s 3d were parsed for payment. Metalling to Watsons road, commencing at junction of Wast road at Three Horse Shoes Hotel. Filling up drains on North road opposite the properties of Measra Maltby and Metssger.Norrifl, Dalgleigh'and others.
