Captain Whitney, tbe manufacturer, procured come stronger powder and with it filled the cartridges sent for trial to Wanganui. The extra strength, acting on the weak cartridges blew out the ends and produced the result which led to the hasty abandonment of the proceedings. Proper powder '8 on its way from England, and the Government anticipate that with practice and by dint of expeiimenting the present defects will be remedied. APPROPBIATE.— Mr J, B, Hawkins, the senior clerk in the Corporation's service, was yesterday presented by his fellow officers with & marble clock with which to adorn his new home in Teviot street, and also with a work basket of elegant design for the " other party" to a raaniage contract which will b« signed and sealed in a few days.
