Southland Land Board

TfIUESDAY, lITH MABCH. The first fortnightly meeting of the Board was attended by the Chief Oommissioner (Mr J. Spence), ani Messrs - Lumsden, Toshacb, Cowan, and Kinross. The following applications were granted: —For cash purchase : Section 7, block 2, Mossburn, J. W. Bradmore and R. Buchanan ; section 1, block 1, Fernbills, T. Scully; Oo deferrel payment: Sections 9 and 10, block 13, Wallacetown, D. Hardy. To transfer : Section 327, Taringatura, from the trustee of J. A. Rolton (deceased) to Margaret Rolton, for whom Mr Morrab appeared ; section 9, block 8, Campbelhown, from N. Wood to T. E. Wood. To complete pnrchaßo : Section 9, block 3, Centre Hill, W. K. Burkitt ; section 159, Wairio, G. Groves ; section 4, block 3, Bast Dipton, G. Couley ; section 2, block 4, Meuzifcß Ferry, Peter Hughes. To capitalise : Section 574, Hokonui, W. Bennison. To lease : Section 1, block 11, Lowther, M. Malone, at LI per annum. The Ranger having reported that James Maben had not complied with the regnlitibns with reference to deferred payment 1 section 634, Hokonui, it was resolved that he be called on to show cauae why the land should not be forfeited. A transfer of C. R. Martin's sawmill area, Winton Bush, to Wellington, Smyth and Co. was sanctioned. Frank Harley, by letter, applieJ for a lease for himself and G. Beer of the coal mining reserve No. 4, Braxton (80 acres), over which he held a piospeiting protectiion. Win. Coghlin appeared and asked that half of the area should be given to him. He prodaced the protection certificate on which Harley founded his Bpplication, to Bhow that he (Coghlin) was named in it as a partner. He also asserted that he bad paid for the certificate, had found all the money for prospecting, and had found the coal. He did not' desire to have any farther connection with Harley, and asked the Board to consider bis claims. George Beer prodaced an authority to tot for Barley but withdrew from the position on hearing Goghlin's statements, and pat in an application for himself. It was resolved, in view of the complications that had arisen, to ask the parties to appear at the Board's next meeting on 25th mat. } the Ranger to report on the Whole question, and if possible, ace the parties #ith a view to- an amicable arrangement of tl.eir claims. John Francis^ fisherman, asked the Board to grant him 60 acres at Sandy Point on deferred payment. The Uhief Commissioner having explained that the land, although originally a native reserve, Was now free 10 be dealt with, it was resolved to recomtueod the Governmeat ' to class the land as deferred payment. The RaDger was instruct ed to report on an application by a immberof settlers that gection 11, block 3, Centre Hill, should be Reserved for peat fuel purposes^ 0. W. Dawson applied for a sawmill area in the Otspiii climatic reserve. He intended to cut only the black pine and totara timber, and would not iDJure the bush for climatic purposes. The Chief Commissioner said that the question had been before the Boaid previously, bat a change bad taken place ■ince j these reserves beiDg now managed by the Commissioner of Forests, to whom application would have to be made. Mr Denniston remarked that he was glad that that reaponsibi'ity had been taksn **" off the Board. W. Fryer, -, Makarewa, .applied to have section 10, block 6, in that township offered for sale on deferred payment.— Resolved that the Government be recommended to make the alteration. Mrs Tippett appeared iD support of her husband's application to have section 42, block 9, Winton (Limehills), now deferred payment land, valfted at L 2 10a per acre, fold for cash at LI. The reason assigned was that the land was inferior to that surrounding it. The Chief Commissioner said the application was an extraordinary one, aod the Board would have some difficulty in giving the Government a reason for recommending the change. It was not even Baid that the land was unsuitable for deferred payment occupation ; as a matter of fact, the family were going to live on it, and it would be unfair to those adjoining who had paid L 2 10* per acre to reduce the value of this area.— Resolved that the Banger report on the quality and character of the land. M. Butler applied to have sections 1 and 3, block 2, Seaward Bush township (reBwved for recreation pu-poses), offered for dale on deferred payment.
