ANNUAL GATHERING,

As ia always the cane, the attendance on the second day of tbe gathering was greatly less than thai on the first, the very strong cbuuter-attractio& formed by the BldS regatta enticing thousands from the to^b who would probably otherwise have been on the ground. Under the circumstances, however, [and considering tbe boisterous nature of the weather, a fairly large number, say about eight hundred, were present during the day the auin of L 36 having been taken at the gates. During the day tbe wind was pretty high,, and occasional showers of rain made things temporarily somewhat > unpleasant. With these difficulties to contend with the directors cay congratulate themselves upon tbe fact that the day's sport passed o& so well, and that the Capital programme was gone through without a hitch. The officers were as attentive and assiduous in the performance of their duties as on the previous day. All the events were of a most interest* ing nature, and the contests in some of them were particularly good, Bissett gained the Ist prize for putting the 141 b ball with 36ft sin, McKenzie being second with 35ft Ilia. S. Morris afterwards gave an exhibition throw, covering 37ft i^in. The three mile race was perhaps the event of the day. Many were of opinion that O'Donnell had the race in his own hands, but Campbell proved too good for him i with his start of 25 yards. The mile handicap was also won by Oampbell (40 yards) with Marshall (75 yards) second. Smyth, who got a long Btart, kept the lead for a few laps, but towards the finish he was passed by all the othe/s, and came in last. During the hammer throwing for the Ferguson Cup the flags were lowered half-mast and a piper played a lament in memory ot tbe donor of the prize, the late Neil Ferguson. The Irish wrestling proved an excellent competition, aud was eventually won by i? 1 . H. McLaan, who also took the prize la6t year. This time McLean showed a decided improvement, and wrestled more according to the nnwritten rules of the style than on the former occasion. He is unquestionably a VBry quick and clevpr wrestler, and with a little more experience and practice will be hard to beat. Pour entered for the Scotch wrestling, but N. McLeod paeily showed his superiority over the others, and secured first honours. The bicycle race proved a rather hollow affair, Hobson, who got 140 yards from the only other starter, J. Wilson, maintaining bis advantage without diffiou ty to the end. The hurdle race was well contested, and the amateurs' mile handicap was also a good event. The dancing and pipe playing was up to the usual high standard. The following is the prize-list :— Boys' half-mile walking race— lat, £1, 97. Mitchell (50yds) ; 2nd, 10a, W. McKenzie (50yds).
