Death resulted from loss of blood in child-birth. At a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce the proposed increase of the Customs tariff duties was condemned. WELLINGTON, Monday. At a special meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce a resolution was unanimously passed deprecating any important changesjof the taf iff of 1882. During the. progress of a particularly interesting case in the Bankruptcy Court to-day Mr Justice Richmond said he should be glad to find that the duty of taking notes of evidence had been taken away from him and placed on the shoulders of a short-hand writer. Mr Traverß, after pointing out that the idea of employing short-hand wiiters came from America, remarked that he had his doubts as to the efficiency of the system introduced into that country. His Honour said it was somewhat singular that in New Zealand the people who were most concerned were rarely consulted when a change was contemplated. His opinion was that if he was able~to take the notes which the Judge was obliged to take, the shorthand writer should be quite fit to oconpy the Judge's seat. He thought, however, that the system was not such a good one as many believed it to bo. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. On Baturday, Matson and Co. held a sale of agricultural land, when very satisfactory prices were obtained. Six hundred and seventy-two acres at Lincoln, 12 miles from Christchurch, were sold at prices ranging fiom Ll3 to L 22 10s per acre, realising a gross of L 12.241, while 115 acres at Southbridge, 36 miles from Christ' church, were sold at L 22 10s per acre. At a meeting of the Corn Exchange today a resolution was pawed protesting against the proposed duty on coal. The annual report of the Union Insurance Company shows a credit balance of L 20.285. It is proposed to pay the usual annual dividend of 10 p^r cent., absorbing LIO.OOO, and to carry L 10,285 forward to next year. The directors state that if the bill now before Parliament, proposing to allow Insurance Com* panics to register with limited liability, becomes ilaw they will consult with the shareholders as to registering under the amended Act. They a'so say that they do not advocate those clauses in the bill requiring deposits from foreign companies. At a well-attended Fpecial meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce I eld. to-day a series of resolutions condemnatory of the proposed alterations in the Customs tariff was agreed to. The resolutions affirmed that in the opinion of the Chamber the new tariff is calculated to be prejudical not only to the agricultural and commercial but also to tbe manufacturers and general interests of the colony. A football match was played to-day between toama selected from Wellington College and Chrisls College, and resulted in a viotory for the latter by three tries to nil. ASHBURTON, Monday. At a Bpecial meeting of the Aehburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association tnday, the following resolution was carried : — " That it is desirable, in the opinion of this meeting, that direct Bteam communication should be opened up with Queensland, and that the co-operation of kindred associations in the South Island be invited for the purpose of obtaining from the Government a subsidy for a direct steamer between New Zealand ports and Queensland." OAMARU, Monday. A large public meeting was held here to-night to consider the new Customs tariff and tho Local Government measures. Resolutions condemnatory of the tariff were carried by large majorities. A motion asking the Government to bring in a measure to protect and encourage local industries was rejected by a large majority. Particular objection was taken to the duty on coal. The Local Bodies Finance and. Powers Bill was condemned, as it would lead to more expenses, and perpetuate the ! slavish dependence of local bodies upon the Government. A resolution was carried unanimously in favour of asking the Govornraent to forego their proposed vote of L 50,000 for immigration. {The resolutions will be forwarded to the members for the town and district. DUNEDIN, Monday. At a meeting pf shareholders of the Westport Coal Company it was agreed to wait as a deputation on the directors as to thejeason for,th.e last call.
