Gore.

(from our own correspondent.) The weather during- the past week has been very stormy indeed, putting a stop to all oat-door work. The roads are extremely bad ; I do not remember having seen our main thoroughfare in a wore© condition. At last in eetingof the Gordon Mutual Improvement Society, a paper on " Physical Forces" was read by Mr Robertson, and was well received. The meifrngs of these^debating societies which, during the winter months, have been productive of much good to the members, will shortly close for the season. We have no lack of societies. "Another, the Gore Political Society, has just been started. The first meeting was held in the Town Hall on Friday night, Mr J, MacGibbon, president, in the chair. Th« subject brought up for discussion was Free Trade v. Protection : Messrs Beatti© and Douglass defended the latter, and Messrs Canning and Fletcher the free trade side of the question ; end all wer« listened to with rnuuh attention. The chief object which this society has in view is to educate the people politically ; and it is intended to hold meetings from time to time as necessity may require, to discuss political matters. It was a at first intended that no membership roll should be kept, but that everyone should be considered as belonging to the sDciety wh ) chose to attend its meetings and that incidental expenses should be defrayed hy voluntary contribution. It was, however, decided at this meeting that a roll should be kept, and that 2a 6d be the fee admitting to membership. It is understood, however, that all who choose to attend the meetings will be made heartily welcome. On Tuesday next, our Presbyterian friends again meet for the purpose of choosing a minister. It is to be hoped that final and unanimous etepa will then ba taken in this direction, and that no discussion may result. We are experiencing the lull after the storm in political affairs. It will not be ao after the Parliament meets, as we have several grievances to redress ; chief amongst wliich will be the Waimea railway tax, and the union of our town districts into one municipality. Some officialism has interfered with the success of the latter project so far. 2nd August.
