„ — * (PEU PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Monday. A five-roomed cottage, the property of Mr Johnston, at Northcote, has been burned down. It was insured for L2OO in the New Zealand Insurance Company. The City Council have introduced a bylaw re streets obstruction,which is believed to be levelled at the suppression of the Silvalionists holding service in the public streets. The churches practising open-air preaching have taken alarm, and a petition against the proposed bylaw is being signed in all the city churches. WELLINGTON Monday. Mr Red wards (Redwood ?) and Drs Newman aad Buller are mentioned as cindidates for the Thorndon seat. It is stated that a calogram is. to be sent to Mr Gisborne, in England, asking if he would be willing to stand. Mr Gisborne is ex- , pected to return to Wellington Bhortly. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Mr R. D. Carruthers, an old settler, and formerly manager of the Trust and Loan Co., died on Saturday last. At the inquest this morning on the bodies of the children of the woman Roil, who had them in her charge when they were drowned, Dr Thomas stated that Mrs Roil suffered from puerperal mania after her last confinement, and on several subsequent occasions had complained of pains in her head. No evidence was adduced to show how the children came to be in the river, and the jury returned a verdict to that effect. ARROW, Monday. All indications of the threatening rain have cleared off, and the weather is delightfully warm and fine. If this state of things lasts for a few days there are hopes that another month of fine hot weather may follow. Th's would of course suffice to ripen and harvest all the crops now standing out. Oats are still veiy backward b it every day of fine weather is telling on their appearance, and there will in all probability be a fair yield — much better than could have been expected a few weeks ago. DUNEDIN, Monday. The sacred concert by the Opera Company in aid of the funds of the Benevolent Institution realised LIOO. The amateur athletic sports postponed from Saturday by reason of bad weather came off to-day, when it was cold though fine. The attendance was not very large. The mile race was won by Hastings, of Wellington, with 45 yards start, in 4 mm. 58 spc. The turf was in wretched condition for running. F. A. Cutten won the bicycling events. The farmers intend to continue to strongly oppose the decision of the grain buyers to allow nothing for bags when buying. The motion for which all the farmers voted on Saturday was to continue the system heretofore in vogue of getting sevenpence allowed for each bag, but this was out- voted by the dealers present at the meeting. A general holilay was kept to-day, it being the thirty-sixth anniversary of the foundation of Otago.
