Mail Services.

TO THE EDITOR. j Sib, — It ia surprising that the administrators of the Government of the colony should continue the mail service via San Francisco at an annual charge by way of I Rubeidy of over £31,000. The mails have hitherto taken from 43 to 45 days, day to Christchurch ; the colony bearing the cost of the distribution of the mail after arrival in Auckland. The New Zealand Shipping Company advertise their new Bteam service as a 45 days service ; instead, therefore, of contiautug the subsidy to the 'Frisco Hoe it would be much more advantageous to the colony to pay the 6ame subsidy to a company that would run a direct line of steamers, carrying the mails, passengers, and immigrants to the colony within a period of 45 clays. Such a would develop a .large passenger and immigrant traffic, which, from the greater costliness of the service has not been, and cannot be> created by the 'Frisco route. — I am, &c. Progress. Invercargill, May 2nd, 1883.
