MELBOURNE, Dec. 1

The election of a member for Melbourne Pro-yipce in the Council has ies"lted in the return of Mr Ham, who beat Dr Beaney by. Seven votes. Mr Coppin, who was also a candidate, was tliiid. Messrs Goklsborough and Co. (Limited), report that they have sold 4700 bales at their wool auctions this week. Prices have been firmly maintained. Greasy wools have brought from 7d to 13d, and washed from 16d to 21fd, according to quality and condition. The good attendance of home and foreign buyers continue, and brisk competition has been experienced.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report having catalogued 3000 bales at their wool sales this week. Of this quantity 2400 have been sold. There has been a good attendance of buyers, and brisk competition, although no specially good lots have been offered. In sympathy with the London market the lower classes of wool are easier.
