The Chairman stated that since the auditor made his report the sum of £300 had been paid in, so that the arreai* were Tery much lessened. During the last session of Parliament the sum of £2700 had been advanced as a ilood loan, but it had since been written off, *o that they were no longer responsible. Ilewas glad to inform them that he had secured a socuon for County Council offices. Th<? election of chairman was then proceeded with. Mr Basstian proposed that Mr Hirst should act as chairman for the ensuing year. Seconded by Mr Johnston. Captain Stevens proposed Mr Johnston. Seconded by Mr Hamilton. Mr Gardiner proposed Mr Basstian. Seconded by Captain Hankinson. Captain Hankinson said they all knew the past actions of their chairman, and how well lie had conducted the business of the Council. The only drawback he saw was that there was every chance of his being elected for the General Assembly, and if such wera the case it would make it rather inconvenient for them. Mr J. W. Hamilton quite agreed with Captain Hankinson. Mr Mackintosh thought the only way of getting out of the difficulty would be to vote for Mr Basstian. Mr Johnston said Mr Hirst had discharged his duties well, and it would be a pity to elect someone else to fill his place on the supposition that he would be elected to the House of Representatives. He thought they were assuming too much. Mr Hirst was eventually elected, there being only one or two dissentients. On account of it being Presbyterian fast day the meeting was adjourned until 10th December.
