The following year h : was awarded the premium of the Gold .Medul at the Tokomairiro Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Grand Show, open to all comers, and was reckoned by competent judges to be the best bred horse in Otago. Al-o, the Gold Medal at the Clutha. His graudsire, Surprise, wa3 out of the famous mare Comet, the first prize- •-aker for many years. When two years old, he gained several first-class prizes, and when three years old, he t-ok the tirst prize at Glasgow, and a premium of thirty sovereigns ; at four rears old he took a premium of forty guineas at Kiikcaldy, and a similar premium the following year at the same place ; and the same year he took the Highland Society's prize at Inverness ; when seven years old -,i premium of forty guineas and a silver medal was awarded him fit Glasgow ; at eight years old he took a prize of forty guineas, and tbe tirst prize at Kirkcaldy when nine years old a premium of forty guineas at Glasgow ; and was the sire of one hundred and forty-uiue prize colts and fillies, while his stock have never be^n beaten cither in 'the ructher country or in the colonies where they have been introduced. Lanarkshire. Souththouxe's dam, Grand Duchess, bred by Mr Lokard, and bought by Mr .McLean, from the Duke of Hamilton, at n very high price. Grand Duchess gained a number of first-class prizes^-fir^t* at the Glasgow Highland Society's ShoV, Dunbarton, Hamilton, Johnston. &c. ■ Grand Dachess, sister to Dnke of Hamiltop's'mare, bred by Mr Brit, by Garibaidi/and never beaten. Garibaldi left first-class" Stock, and took the first pritfe for three-year-old stallion at the Highland Society's Show at Perth, besides many other prizes. . ■ .? Southtuohxe is an excellent model of a draught horse, beautiful fright dappled bay color, standing sixteen and. three-quarters hands high, combined with excellent power 'and superior action with "plenty of bone and muscle, and; ? splendid hair and beautiful temper. He gained' the following prizes at the Southland Agricultural and Pslstonl Society's Grand Shotf. First, when one, two, three, and four years old, open to all comers ; also two 'first prises in Victoria against a number of fine horses ; on his arrival back in Ot.igo, first prize at Blueskm Agricultural Show; also tiist prize at Shag Valley Agricultural Societys Show; first at Tolcomairiro, and a bonus of £40 by the farmers to travel the district; and first prize at Balclutha Agricultural Society's Show ; and was awarded first honors on two occasions at the Walking Parade of Entires held at the Arrow District, there being no annual show for two years. And last year at the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Grand Show, considerable excitement wag manifested between the respective merits of Souththorne and Prince of Wales. A good English grass paddock, Tfit hi running stream provided for mares, at Scott's Corner, Edendale ; also, one at Mr Mabens Sunnyside, Wyodham, at 2s 6d per weelc every care taken, but no respibility.
