NAPIER, Wednesday. Henare Tomoana, M.H.R., through the Herald, gives notice to the stewards of the Hawkes Bay Racing Club, that he will not permit the club's annual races to be held on the course. Tomoana also resigns his position as steward. It is alleged that the club did not ask his permission to use the course this year. This is doubtless the cause of the notice in question. NELSON, Wednesday. It is stated that some 60 applications have already been received for the office of secretary to the Nelson Education Board ; salary, £350. The appointment will probably be made to-morrow. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The Oddfellows' Hall was again crowded last night on the occasion of Pastor Chiniquy's second lecture. The Rev C. Dallaston, who Occupied the chair, said that Chiniquy's work entitled him to be remembered as a Reformer side by side with Luther, Calvin, and Knox. A man named John Stewart, in the employ of Mr Coup, timber merchant, was found hanging by the neck, dead, iv a whare at Tai Taipo. Deceased had tied the rope to a piece of scantling in the roof, mounted a form and kicked it away. He had been drinking heavily of late.
