To-day the result of a trial-test made at the Thames was received. The result was 50 specs as fine as flour from 105 ounces of quartz. Mr Webb has compromised the action fov alleged libel against Mr Ed<;ecombc, which was set down for the present civil sittings. The Attorney-General had been instructed for the defence ; Mr He3keth for the prosecution. CHRISTCHURCH, MONDAY. Court to-day a man named Gosman, who was arrested for assaulting a girl nanwd Swan by kissing her, was discharged, as it came out in evidence that the information was laid through ill-feeling which bad existed between thejgirl's parents and accused (who were in partnership), and purely at the instigation of the parents. Mr Beethara, R.M. of Timaru, sat on the bench to-day for the purpose of hearing a case of' alleged assault on the Assistant Bailiff by a solicitor. A number of men arc about the township to-day, but the majority are already engaged for the harvest. It is stated that a number of petty robberies have occurred at the Ilakaia lately. O. Bode, hairdresser and tobaczonisr, was drowned in the harbor yesterday through the upsetting of a dingy. At the inquest on the body of William Desmond, the jury found that death arose from epilepsy, occasioned by CT.cessive drinking, and accelerated by poison. Neil, the herbalist, who sold the poison to deceased, was censured for not taking better precautions in selling the same. The poison consisted of Batt le's Vermin Killer, which contains strychnine. At the City Court, Charles Billson, with five aliases, received twelve months' imprisonment for stealing a coat. Seven previons convictions for larceny of goods since 1876 were proved again si the prisoner. William Watson received twelve mouths, on two charges of stealing a horse and saddle.
