The Southland Times. PUBLISHED DAILY. Luceo Non Uro. THURSDAY, 27th NOVEMBER, 1879.

The member for Invercargill has again introduced tothe Government the ■ question for registering mining companies at this, end ,'pf' the Island, and how it appeal's there are difficulties" in the' way" of -registering afrthe Invercargill -Supreme Court 1 Office that are only to be surmounted by : the amendment of the Mining Companies' Act. Although the registration of such companies has been of , exceptional occurrence in connection with Southland mines, yet enough have been registered to render the nigdus operandi sufficiently clear. We should have been surprised indeed if the parties interested, and acting under legal advice, had overlooked anything- in the Act that wotild have: obviated the necessity of going to : Dunedin to register^ The truth is, however, there was no alternative to that course. It is true that the Mining. Act - of .1872 provided for registering mining companies "£t the Supreme Court ; jof :. the judicial district in which it is proposed to carry oh operations.". .The Act further provided that "if there be more than one Supreme Court office in the jadicial7district" registering shall be transacted at whichever qfjthe, two offices the Governor may be pleased to appoint for the; purpose. Now, there are two Supreme Court offices in jthe Southern judicial district, known as the Dtag-o and Southland district, and, as might bare been expected, the one at Dunedin ; was selected as .the .registering focus^ at whose instigation- it matters not, but it is said that; Mr /Bathgate was prominent in the n»t //At any 7rate,'the selection was made and endorsed, first of all by warrant, under the; hand of the Governor, oiv March 23rd, 1875,' and in September of ; thb. same year, by Act iof the General Assembly. It" was gazetted in tthe usual form, and then, as Ysoine doubts arose with regard to retrospective action,- the Registration vof .%„ Mining Companies r . ; Validation Act was passed. By the Governor's warrant the ; -Supreme Court; offices of 7 Auckland, Nelson, and Dunedin, were/ appointed registrars' offices for the "Northern Nelson'*' a^id "Otago and Southland" '.. judicia'l^distncts' %, the purposes qi registering;! mining companies, there being- more than one office in /each district, and the Validation Act . was r passisd ; merely: 7to clejar /up certain doubts attached to the validity of- Acts of Registration at the said^offices: prior; to ■ the;jdate~ of the proclamation;^ : It j ilso endorses the '/term's .of the prqclamatibn in a very, emphatic manner, and -as no further amendment,^ bearing, piijhe, subject, has y been -introduced 'since "then there! cahi be no doubt about Dunedin Bang the place at which to register, pad not Invercargill. Therefore, as the

'Legislature has bound, the Legislature must loose,; which it is proposed to j do by inserting a clause in the Mining ; Companies' Act, 1872, Amendment Bill, i now before Parliament. And so the i matter stands. Mr Bain will, of course, keep the Government to tiieir word, and so open tlie Supreme Court Jiere ii^^:WM<^ hood willprbve "a mshbfbusiness stiorfcly. ■ Weliope the last has been heard,., of registering SouthlaindiittiningiCompaniWat ,^l*o^^7,;; --„y rr . yxx-:y.y^;,-yyx,,yyyx-.. ..

Cameron applied for bail, but the Court refused to grant it. He . was removed to town and; conveyed to his residence,- where he' now lies. Morrison, we understand, is employed as a,h i engine driver oh the Bluff line. 7 . ;. The Wool Sales*— Messris Cargills, Gibbs, & Co have; received the following telegram ' from Messrs Helmnth; Schwartze & Co, dated London, 22nd November .—The tone of the market is very firm. Home buyers operate freely, the advance being chiefly on long stapled wools. Prices ior washed cross-breds are on the average 3d to 4d higher than at the close of last series. Prices for combing fleece, washed and scoured, are on the average 2d per lb higher than at the close of last, series. Foreign buyers act with much reserve.
