When two years old, he gained several first-class prizes, and when three years old, he took the first prize at- Glasgow; and a premium of thirty sovereigns ; at four years old he took a premium of forty guineas at Kiikcaldy, and a similar premium the following year at the same place ; and the same year he took the Highland Society's prize at Inverness ; when seven years old a premium of forty guineas and a silver medal was awarded him at Glasgow ; at eight years old he took a prize of forty guineas, and the firet prize at Kirkcaldy ; when nine years old a premium of forty guineas at Glasgdw, -and was the sire of one hundred and forty nine prize colts and fillies,- while his 'Stock have never been beaten either , in the mother ' country or in the colonies where they have i been introduced. The Pure Bred Clydesdale Entire Horse Southorne, four years old, was bred by Hugh McLean, Esq. ; sire, the far-famed and well- | known stallion Thane of Clyde, bred by I Thomas Young, Esq., Renfrewshire, Scotland; grandsire, the celebrated entire horse ( Surprise*, bred by Mr Murdoch, Lanarkshire. Soutborne's dam, Grand Duchess, bred by Mr Lokaid, and bought by Mr McLean, 'from ' the Duke of Hamilton, at a very . high ' price. ] Grand Duchess gained a number of first-class ' prizes, first at the Glasgow Highland Soci- > ety's Show, Dumbarton, Hamilton, Johnston, . &c. Garibaldi* left first-class i stock, and took the first prize for three-year-old i stallions at "the Highland Society's Show at f Perth, besides many other prizes. Souththorne is an excellent model of a ! draught; horse, beautiful bright dappled Bay colour, standing sixteen aud three-quarters ! hands high, combined with excellent power and superior action, with plenty of bone aud muscle, and splendid hair and beautiful temper. He gained the following prizes at the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Grand Show. And last year at the Southland Agricultural -and Pastoral Society's Grand Show, considerat ble excitement was manifested between the ' respective merits of Souihthorne and Prince of Wales; so close was the contest that it was puzzling to fix on the ultimate winner. Never were hoises subjected to such a severe tost — they were carefully inspected, but still the \ judges seemed dissatisfied, and after a careful debate awarded the red ticket to Prince of Wales, at the same time pronounced South■thornetobe quite on equal terms with the .first horse. Souththorne is sire of a number ; of very valuable animals in Southland, and elsewhere and is ho doubt one of the best, if not the best horse ever bred in the colonies. A good English.
