WASTE LANDS BOARD.

* , . The ordinary meeting of the "Waste Lands Board was held in the Commissioner's office yesteiday, at half-past 12 o'clock. Present — Messrs Pearson "(chairman), Denniston, Pratt, Lumsden, Toshach, and Kinross. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr E. Graham made an application for a special license to cut trees in the Forest ' Hill Bush. The timber was required for the construction of the Oreti bridge. Mr A. Ascott applied for 91 acres of land in the Long wood" district, section 12, block 2. •Application granted. Mr Henry B. Campion's application for a lease of .a deferred payment section at Hokonui,was referred to the Eanger to report. Mr Reade appeared in support of an application from John McFarlane in reference to the purchase of a deferred payment section, Oreti Hundred. • The Ranger reported favorably, and permission to purchase was granted. A letter was received from the clerk of the Southland County Council, enclosing a plan of the deferred payment sections in the Waihopai riding prior to the Ist January, and upon which the Council recommended expenditure out of funds obtainable from land sold on deferred payments.. The Chairman l-ead a letter from the Chairman of the Wallace County Council, making - a similar application. • Mr Kinross thought there was a separate grant for that, county. Mr Pratt pointed out that confusion was liable to -arise, owing to 'one part of the county being in the Otago Land District. The- Clerk of the 'Aparima Road Board j appliel on behalf of that body under the ' same terms. A letter was' then read from the Govern- . menfc, describing the proposed allocation of £1280, granted, or appropriated for roads in deferred payment lands. \ . It was resolved with reference to the first application, namely, from the Southland County, that the site of the proposed expenditnre be approved . Eegarding the Wallace County, it was deckled, that; Mr Hirst's application was not - sufficiently definite, and the Clerk was instructed to write him for particulars of roads. - ' With regard to Mr Fullarton's (Aparima) letter, it was resolved to submit the application to the Souohland County Council for approval. - 1 An application was received from the Makarewa Road Board for a piece of land for road division at section. 10, block 0, Win-, ton district.

';•;■: A report from -'Mr Warden "Wood on sections in Orepuki, which had been applied for, and recommending that •they should be opened for sale, was adopted. A letter from the Mayor of Winton was received, enclosing a resolution of the Council accepting the exchange of laud suggested for a recreation ground by the Board. The Under- Secretary for Lands wrote, intimating that sections 8 and 9, Otautau, had been reserved from sale. The Bluff Harbor Board called attention to its application for an endowment of 35,600 acres in the Taringatura district, and applied to have it laid off in blocks. A letter was read from the Chief Surveyor. Sir Spence, which is held over till next issue. It was resolved, after some discussion, to forw.ard . the report of the surveyor to the Harbor Board. - A notification was received from Mr R. F. Cuthbertson to the effect that all the -forms necessary in reference to the construction of a water-race had been complied with.
