CRICKET.

♦ A match between the Dipton and Inveiv cargiil clubs, eleven a side, was played at Dipton ' on Wednesday,' and if the cricket was not- first-rate a very enjoyable day was spent. The ground, however, was not first-class, being newly turfed, whilst long-stopping in the tussocks was not by any means easy. The.lDvercargill team was weakened by the non-attendance of one, of its best bowlers, Mr Reade, who had to stay at home on account of illness. The team arrived. at Oreti at 10 o'clock, and after breakfasting at Purdue's,, proceeded to the ground, and : found their opponents waiting and everything .ready. The Dipton team was captained by J. Morrison, and the Invercargill men by Ross, ■ and the latter winning the toss decided' to take the field. -Hare and Ray first went- to tlie wickets to the bowling of Buchanan and Bennett, the latter being very effective in the first innings and the former in the second. Eventually Galbraith relieved Bennett. Hayward bowled well ior Dip- '• tonj in fact it was a bowler's day throughout, the ground being so lively. Bishop did excellent long stopping for Invercargill, and unfortunately received a very severe blow on the eye through the ball rebounding off the rough ground. Each side having taken an innings, the teams adjourned to Purdue's to " dinner, which provided by the Dipton Cliib. ' ' It was a capital spread, and after it had been disposed of, the game was resumed by Dipton again ■ going to the wickets. The play disclosed no particular merit, Kingswell alone getting into double figures by putting twelve .together ; whilst Buchanan made a capital leg hit for five.
