WAIKAIA.
-o — Writing on the 20th inst;, our correspondent says : — This district for the last few days has been visited with some splendid showers, causing everything to brighten up, besides cooling the atmosphere to a most comfortable degree. One of our oldest and most respected residents, Mr George Moffitt, died on Thursday last, after a few days' illness. He leaves a wife and six .young children to mourn his loss. About 120 residing in the district (including members of the 1.0.0.F.,M.U ,of which he was a member), on Saturday last showed their last mark of esteem and respect by following his remains to the cemetery. In connection with the above, I have been shown a telegram received from a M.U., residing about 28 miles from here, who had been telegraphed to, to have a, consultation with the resident M.D. here, wherein he required a guarantee of the modest fee oi 32 guineas immediately on his arrival. This fee was too modest ; the M.D. therefore was not required. Far different was the M.D. at Gore, who came in the middle of the night " at less than half the above amount, although a lougcr distance and a much worse road.
