MATAURA ELECTION.
♦ As we anticipated yesterday the receipt of the returns from Fortrose greatly increases the majority by which Mr Shanks has been returned as member for Mataura. The figures are to some extent unofficial as yet, but the formal declaration of the poll will be made to-day atnoon, and there is no reason to suppose that it will reveal any inaccuracy in the full|statement of votes polled. The declaration will be made by the returning officer, Mr Henderson, in front of the Government Buildings,' and both successful . and unsuccessful candidates are expected to be present. The following are the full returns for the election : —
The majority for Mr Shanks is thus 59.
