ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
Auckland, Jan. 16. The mail steamer City of Sydney, Captain-H.. C.Dearborne, arrived at Auckland at half-past twelve this morning. She left 'Frisco December 23rd, at 3.40 p.m. j experienced strong KW. gales and rough sea during first twenty-four hours, and thence to Honolulu moderate weather and light" winds, arriving there at 12.54 p.m., December Both, thus making the trip in six days, twenty-one hours, twenty-four minutes— r the fastest . time ever . accomplished. She left Honolulu, December 3lßt, at 6.41 a.in., having Joeen detained seven -hours owing to strong southerly : weather. On Saturday,; January 11; at 5.25 p.m., latitude 31.44 S., longitude 179.17 E., being about 460 miles from Auckland, the after crank-pin of the engine broke. The wind was then N.!E., and the steamer was kept unSer -sail until January 14, the wind meantime varying between -U.E. ana NVW. round to S.W. Having'secured the crankphi temporarily as well as could be done at sea, the engines were moved ahead again at 1.30 p.m.-. "on the 14th at a rate of five knots an hour, which was kept up until her arrival at Auckland, where -she arrived accordingly. Up to the time of accdent the engines worked excellently, the ship having averaged 300 miles a day for 17 consecutive days from 'Frisco- — an almost unparalleled rate. The City of Sydney brings 12 cabin and 12 steerage passengers for New Zealand, 1851 packages of cargo, 301 bags of mails. For Australia, she has 22. cabin and 36 steerage passengers, 5191 packages of cargo, and 196 bags of mails.
