'~ Investor's Guide. — We have received Mr rl B. Bradshaw's share report and Investor's >vide for the' month of January It is a nost useful publication, and should be m jveryonc's bands who wishes to obtain an .nsight into the share market. Easter Bazaar.— We are glad" to , hear that -the Hospital vand Benevolent Institute to hand m, hand this year to, as' our American friends would say, " run" a bazaar at Easter time. It is really high time that all opposition between charitable institutions, m their appeal to. the, public, should cease, and that there should be perfect accord and the absence of anything approaching^ rivalry. They are kindred m their objects, each .has special claims to present, and every other movement ought to give way to them wnen they legitimately " come forward to ask -for help. We notice that the joint committee are issuing invitations to the ladies of the district to take part m the projected bazaar, and as there will be something near ; akin to unanimity of response we shall look forward j to a very taking exhibition indeed at Easter tide. Fatal' Accident.— - A sad fatal accident- ' occurred yesterday evenihgv at Waianawa. It would seem that MrMcKinley was passing along the road during the evening, when he perceived a man lying m the middle of the road. He at once made an examination, and found that the man was dead, and, from appearances presented, concluded, from the fact-of deceased being a bullock driver, that the'dray had passed over the right side of his face. The wounds were o£ a serious nature, and death must have been instantaneous. About 200 yards distant the uni fortunate man's team of horses was standing. The man, whose name is Edward Redden, was m the employ of Mr Jack, sawmiller, Winton. Immediately on the receipt of intelligence m town a constable was desdespatched to'tEe scene to remove the body, and convey it to tL« nearest public-house. An inquest -will be held. , Mat aura Election. — On'Monday.ev,ening Mr Kinross addressed oue of the^jmost numerously attended meetings ever held at Roslyn Bush. After he'had adverted to the various questions likely to occupy Parliament, he pointed out the necessity of united action to beat Ml* Shanks, who had now been accepted as the opposition candidate, and xequcsted his' supporters to form a committee to assist him. A number of questions were then asked and answered. Mr Fleming moved and Mr Halliday seconded : — l( That Mr Kinross has the confidence -of this meeting ; and it considers him a fit and proper person to represent the Mataura District." The mover and seconder having spoken m support of the motion it was carried unanimously. The usual vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Calvert, the chairman. Afterwards a committee -of twelve electors was appointed, with Mr Fleming as chairman. The Blacksmith's Dream. — An exhibition of an unpretentious character, bat none the less meritorious in ' its way, opened m a small nmrquee m Don street,' near to Tay street, last night. The chief feature m the exhibition is a collection of mechanical figures yclept, /-'The Blacksmith's Dream."' A troupe of darkies, a railway train, a steamboat, and a host of minor, figures pursuing industrial occupations, are all kept m motion simultaneously.. The collection must bs amongst the most extensive of its kind that exists, and it is a triumph of mechanical skill, patience, and ingenuity. " Punch and Judy," that unambitious but ever populai domestic drama.which, notwithstanding the obscurity of its origin, has been reproduced more frequently than even Byron's " Our Boys," is represented every 15 minutes, and all the time-honored incidents m the piece are faithfully reproduced. Tne entertainment, though not classical m its character, yet is well worth a visit. ' Calendars for the Tear. — This is the time of year when it rains calendars, they come thickly from the North, and really con-, stitute a good advertising mediums. Dunedin is noted for them, so is Wellington, and we are glad to see that Invercargi&is pretty forward m this direction, not that the aecessity is very pressing, but that local enterprise is thereby indicated. One of the neatest little calendars we have seen for' some time has been published m the name of Mr George Lumsden, by Messrs Craig and Co., of Tay street. The design, a pretty one; is surmounted by a clock, and the; calendar, lithographed of course, is done m seven colors. It is quite equal to anything of the kind we have seen this season from places further afield. The almanac issued by the National Fir£ and Marine Insurance Company, qf which Mr G-. F. Martin is the local agent, is specially worthy of note, for not only is it a neat production from an artistical point of -view, but by a peculiar arrangement it is especially convenient to business men. The dates .for each six working days are printed on separate slips, which may be removed at the expiration of the period. Civil Action's."— At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, a number of of civil cases were disposed of. Family Disputes.— William Simons was arraigned before the Resident Magistrate yesterday morning, 'at the instance of his mpfcher-in-iaw, Bridget ; McLaughlan, on a charge of assaulting .her at Winton on the lstinst. Mr Wade appeared for the. plaintiff, and Mr' Finn lor the defendant. The investigation of the -Case revealed. an unhappy condition of things between immediate relatives. On the morning ,m question the defendant went to his mother-in-law's house, Where his wife was, and knocked m the dooK He also struck : ; the prosecutrix a blow over the head;- She would not have proceeded against him had he not he&a. habitually guilty of misconduct. The /Bench decided that the defendant should find two sureties to keep the peace each m a sum of ;£2O, or one substantial one m £40.— -At the same sitting of the Court a tailor . named Sprrenson was charged with habitually annoying his mp.ther-in T laWf named' Webb; It transpired that the defendant was separated from his •wife, and that :^e/relatiQns^ of /the' : parties werei as m the previous: case,-, of ' a most disagreeable nature; . ;Mr Russell. conducted the prosecution, and Mr Finn the defence. The defendant; was ordered to. Jentef into his own recognisance to keep- the/peace, and also to : ;find a; surety ? in the^suin/igo arid pay £1 17s Gdcosts in addition'. V, : ;,; -! : - .
