■ — — i*- ■ - . Writing on the "'2Bth our correspondent says: — A -meeting of the Eoad Board was held at the Court-house oh Saturday the 21st December. Present: Messrs J. H. Davidson (Chairman), Morris,- Davis, Moffatt, and Brown. The secretary read the minutes of last meeting, which were.confirmed on the motion of Mr Morris, seconded by Mr Brown The secretaiy then read correspondence, received since last meeting. Mr Simsons .resignation was brought before the meeting, and" as no written resignation had been sent in, the Secretary w-asinstructecUo notify to Mr Simson, that he must give notice of same in writing. The appointment of a valuer for the Waikaia District Was brought under discussion w-hich resulted in Mr Davis proposing that the chairman ancl secretary, be : requested.to confer with the present county valuer, with a view of his preparing a valuation roll for the years 1879-80. It was seconded by Mr Brown and carried. Proposed by Mr Moffatt, and seconded by Mr Davies that the secretary be instructed to advertise in the SouthlandDaUy Times, that the Valuation 801 l would be open for inspection, at the house of the secretary from the 15th January.. 1879, to 15th February following. The member for the Nokomia Subdivision, Mr Moffatt stated that the track between the Nokomia and Waikaia, had been rendered impassable owing to the drift timber left by the late flood. On the motion of Mr Moffatt, seconded by Mr Morris, the road inspector was instructed to have the track cleared as soon as the work he was at present employed upon at block S, Waikaia was completed. There being only oue tender received for dray work, the time for receiving tenders was extended to the 31st December, the chairman and Mr Brown were empowered to accept the most eligible. Account for £2 7s Id sundry expenses for past three months, by the secretary was passed for payment.on the motion of Mr Morris seconded by' Mr Brown. The meeting then adjourned. Touching the coach accident of the 2Sth December /Messrs D. ancl W. Fraser, Hunter. Shepperd, Patterson, Robinson, Fraser, J. McLean, J. Stevens, went on Sunday to the scene of the accident on horseback to render what assistance they could, ancl Avell they did it. Mr J. Maclean kindly lent a pair of horses ancl conveyance. At about 2 miles from the scene of the accident the fore part of the coach was picked up,and taken back to the river crossing when it was found the coach had been washed down a distance of about 150 yards from the place of attempted crossing to a'spit in the river, everything in the coach being washed away After considerable trouble the coach was landed, and spliced to the forepart, ancl safely brought to Waikaia at 7 p.m. on Sunday. The plucky ancl civil madman "Tommy Young,"' Mr Hunter, W. Robinson ancl the ruail contractor Mr A. Matheson.were a considerable time on each side of the river hunting for the missing mail bags. They were at last found by Mr Matheson, about three quarters of a mile from the scene of the accident ■ not the better,yet not much the worse for thensubmersion. lam sorry that Mr Young will i be a loser to the tune of about £15 through I the loss of a musical box, great coat, whip, i etc., without taking into consideration the narrow squeak he had for his life, the coach will run again this morning (Monday), Messrs Fraser, and Hunter, having been at work on her since 3 a.m. The annual races o£ this district were held on the 25th and 2fith Dec. They were well attended and well contested. The followingare the events for the first day : — The Maiden Plate of 5 soys., weight for age — distance li mile. Trotting Kace of 5 soys — distance 2 miles ; welter w-eights. Entrance, 10s. Verbena, Patterson, 1 ; Lucy Casley, 2. Switzers District Handicap of 10 soys. — distance, 2 miles. Entrance, £1.- NeUyGray, 1 ; Fraser 2. On the second day the undermentioned events came off and resulted as follows : — Handicap Hurdle Race of S soys. — Distance 2 miles over eight nights of hurdles 3ft. Gin. high. Entrance Ll.— Little Nell, Mclvor 1. Young Trickett, Hulley 2. Miner's Purse, of 5 soys. Entrance 10s. — • Mr Moffatt 1. Waikaia Flat Handicap of 7 soys. Distance 2 miles.
