THE MEW YEAR FESTIVITIES.
-^ During the last two days, the inhabitants of the town and district, of all classes and shades of opinion, have abandoned themselves to enjoyment, each after his own individual bent. Business for the nonce was entirely suspended, and picnics, sports, and shows were the order of the hour. On Monday the great mass of the holiday-makers gravitated towards the Caledonian sports, and the Horticultural Show, though no inconsiderable number found a more congenial amusement with the members of the Young Men's Christian Association at Makarewa. On Tuesday the Bluff! Regatta fell in for the lion's share, but the Sports and the Show were not neglected. The Theatre on both evenings was densely crowded. The weather on New Year's Day was rather unpleasant, a strong west wind blowing ; but yesterday it was all that could have been desired. Full reports of all these holiday proceedings will be found in our columns.
