SYDNEY, July 19. An influential public meeting is to be hela shortly to congratulate Earl Beaconsfield on his success at ibe Congress. SOUTHLAND EDUCATION BOARD. • Fbiday, July 19, 1878. A special meeting of the above Board was held yesterday at th- Resident Magistrate's Courthouse. Present — Vessrs T. Vf. M»cdonald (chairman) McArdell, Shanks,Sproull, Baldey, Lumsden, and Dr vienzies. INSPBOTOBSHIP. Applications for the office of Inspector to the Board were opened. There were twenty applicants. After private deliberation upon the applications, the appointment was conferred upon Mr Gf-oyen, Scate School teacher at Ballan, Victoria, whose gredpntjals were of a very high class indeed. BXRCU-IVB OOMMITTEB. The Committee recommended that the sohool districts fixed by the publio at Gladstone be approved with alterations, inoluding the whole of Avenal. The North Invercargill district was approved of. The first meetings of these committees were fixed for the 26th inst. The request of Waikiwi for a separate school district was declined as the want would be supplied by a new school at Waihopai. Meetings for the definition of school districts were^utborjapd for f-hattop, H£oke Creek! and K^napdale. The application of Gummie .
