The Member foe . — The Wellington correspondent of the Ckriatchurcb. Press telegraphs :— • Dr Henry has risen to a matter of personal explanation in regard to a paragraph in the Post, in which his name was mentioned as having locked up the member for — on the night of the division. He says the member was locked up at his own request, after having promised to vote for the Government. He waa to have returned to fetch him when he woke, but in the meantime members of the Opposition broke open the door and took him out, and persuaded him to vote for the Opposition, which he did to the surprise of the Government. 1

Railway Fencing.— -"We have been shown by Mr L. Looguet two letters, one from Mr Lumsdei, M.H.R., and the other from the Under- Secretary for Public Works, relative to the petition recently presented from Southland, re the fencing of tha Bluff to Winton railway, and stating that a sum has been placed on the estimates providing for the more important portion of the work, and that the Engineer has been requested to repott specially upon the portions requiring to be done.

Accident.— Yestarday afternoon as Mr Allicon was driving a vehicle, belonging to Messrs Tapper Bros., along Dee street, he met a lad. the son of Mr Hamilton, baker, and through some inadvertence on the part of the driver, the shaft of the vehicle came into collision with the horse the lad wt.B riding, the point tearing a very iarge piece out of the flank, leaving aa ugly tvound. The boy was unseated, but escaped without injury. Surely Dee atreet is wide enough for such accidents to be abided with ordinary care.

Indian Relief Fund. — A meeting of committee was held yesterday. Present — The Mayor, the Revs. Stobo, Dean, McNichol, and Green, Messrs J. T. Martin, Macdonald, Denniston, Deck, Yule, Turnbull, and Scandrett, (hon. sec.) On the motion of Mr Denniston, seconded by Mr Macdonald, it was resolved to divide the town into four districts, and appoint two canvassers for each, with instructions to vigorously" canvass by Wednesday, 24th inst. Messrs Deck and Yule to take from the North of Spey street ; Denniston snd Martin, Spey to Esk street; Macdonald and Turnbull, Esk street to Puni Creek; Hall and Froggatt, Boath of Puni (Jreek. It was further resolved to print 200 subscription lists, and to send sne to each of the Banks, and the other public establishments, also to the suburban Municipal Councils, The committee adjourned until next Wednesday, 24th inst.

Volunteer Paeade. — A full parade of the Invereargill Volunteer force waa held last night, the state being reported to the Commanding Officer, Captain Heywood, as follows :— Staff 2; Artillery, 2 commissioned officers,? non-commissioned, 49 guaners ; Rifles, 2 commissioned officers, 8 non-commissioned, 34 rank and file ; band, 1 leader, 2 sergeants, 17 bandsmen. After going through some manual drill the force was divided into four battalions, and put through battalion evolutions by Captain Heywood. Subsequently they marched through the principal streets of the town, headed by the really splendid band. In coming down Tay street in a column, company front, the marching was remarkably steady, that of the Rifles being particularly noticeable— it would have done credit to the regular service. Invercargill has every reason to be proud of its volunteers, and Captain Heywood and his staff and company officers are to be congratulated upon the efficiency of the rank and file.

Deputation.— Yester.:;:y a deputation consisting of the Mayor; and Messrß Stock, Perkins, and Stead waited upon Mr Conyers in order to bring under his notice various matters of importance in connection with his department. Relative to the carters' license for plying within the railway boundary, although personally he (Mr Conyers) was inclined to think it hardly fair, the Government took a different view, and in the face of the fact that it was in force all over the colony and was not complained of elsewhere, he failed to see what could be done. The Railway Keserve would soon be fenced, and that would define the boundary. As regarded the difference between the rates charged for freight here and on the Po?t Chalmers line, Mr Conyers said the matter was being enquired into, and would receive attention. As to storage, Mr Conyers explained that when reasonable diligence was used in removing goods the charges were not made, but the power to enforce ibem must be held in order to deter people from leaving their goods hampering the premises for an indefinite period. After some further conversation the de : putation withdrew.
