Immigration. -We notice from the shipping Gazette that four days after the sailing of the Marlborough for the Bluff the ship Waipa sailed for Port Chalmers with two hundred and eighty emigrants and saloon passengers from London. Both ships will be therefore almost due .together.

Peince of Wales Biethday. — A number of persons have tendered to Mr and Mrs Clifton a complimentary benefit in the form of a miscellaneous concert to take place on the 9th proximo in the Theatre Royal. There can be little doubt that this will meet with the hearty support of the public.

Caledonian Society.— A meeting of the committee of this Society was held last night, at which the Secretary presented a balance sheet shewing the Society to be in a very fair position. Messrs Meadows and Nash were added to the committee. Sub-committees for finance, sports, and grounds were appointed, and requested to report in a fortnight. A letter from the Secretary to the Bluff Regatta Committee was ordered to stand over until the above reports are submitted to a general meeting. It was decided to hold the annual general meeting the fourth week in January next. A sum of LlO was vated to Mr Flemington for his five years services as auditor. A sub-committee was appointed to confer with the A. and P. Association relative to block 45. Mr Mclntyre mentioned the case of the winow and family of the late Mr Joss, and after some conversation L 5 was voted from the funds, and upwards of L 8 was privately subscribed in the room towards the same object.

Tbe Indian Famine. — We are compelled to bold over our report of the very interesting and instructive lecture with which Mr H. Youug last night inaugurated the movement to obtainfunds towards the relief of the sufferers from the Indian famine. After the lecture the following committee was appointed, with power add to their number, viz. :— His "Worship the Mayor, the Rev. Messrs Stobo, Paterson, Tanner, Higgins, Dean, McNichol, and Green, Messrs Macdonald, Wade, _ingsland, Hall, Mitchell, and J. T. Martin.

Hospital Sunday. — We Inve been requested to intimate that, with one exception, the collections in the various churches in town, on Sunday next, will be handed over to the Southland Hospital. As Bishop Moran's periodical visitation to Invercargill had been fixed some time ago, it was found impossible for the Roman Catholic section of the community to fall in with the general arrangement, bat an early opportunity will be taken of responding to the appeal.

Etjnawat.— Mr Millar's Eiyerton coach had barely discharged its passengers yesterday afternoon when the four horses were startled by a sheet of pappr which was flying about in the wind. The affrighted animals bolted at top speed down Tay street, but were fortunately well guided by the driver, who succeeded in arresting Mieir progress opposite Mr Shepherd's, on the East road — without any material damage. A little boy who w>js in the vehicle managed to alight, without injury, while the horses were at a gallop.
