I Criminal j Auckland, Friday. Curtain, who is charged with the murder of a settler named Shanoghan, has been brought down from Papakura, and lodged in Mount Eden Graol. At the Police Court to-day Mary Eane was committed for trial on a charge of killing her female infant. Sporting: Note* Aerolite has gone slightly lame. Middleton has caught fever in the feet from standing on board ship. Neither has been out for the last two or three mornings. Butcher Boy and Medora were offered for sale to-day, but withdrawn. A New Steamer The trial trip of the Rotomahana, the first entire ship of any size built in the Colony, came off to-day. She made very satisfactory speed under easy steam. Her engine's worked smoothly. For about two hours and twenty minutes' steaming there were no stoppages for hot bearings, Sale of a Schooner The schooner Lovette Peacock will be sold by auction on the 25th January for the benefit of whom it may concern. Severely fined Dunedin, Friday. Charges of breaches of tbe Stamps and Registration of Births Acts were heard in the Police Court this morning, and the offenders were severely fined. J?ire Brigade ©sntoitatration At a meeting of the Fire Brigade Demonstration Committee to-day, the following waa the result of drawing for the order in which the several teams will compete: Hose practice— Timaru against Dunedin, and Hokitika against Bailarat, there being one odd team. Engine practice— Timaru firßt, Hokitika second, Dunedin third, Auckland fourth, Bailarat fifth. Hook and ladder practice — Dunedin first, Timaru second, Bailarat third, Hokitika fourth, and Auckland fifth. Captain Moss and a number of the Central Fire Brigade mustered on the wharf thiß afternoon to receive the Auckland firemen. When they landed they took them off to the engine house, where luncheon was provided for them, and drove them about the town the remainder ot the_after_oori. Appointment* Wellington, Friday. The Gazette to-day notifies that the Hon. Mr Richardson has been appointed Minister of Public Works for the purposes >f the Public Works Act, 1876. Mr Wm: Irthur is appointed Chief Surveyor of Itago; and Mr James McKerrow Aasisint Surveyor General. Mr S. T. Smith, | of Taranaki, is appointed first Geological, ' 3IKTOyW» „ j-a-a*... '
