Melbourne, June 23. Yesterday morning a fire occurred in the premises of Thomaa Luke & Co., merchants, King - street. The premises were totally destroyed, together with the stock. The adjoining premises of Francis & McPherson were much damaged by water. . Luke was insured for £13,000 in the following offices: — Australian Alliance, London and Lancashire, National, Northern, and Victoria. On Monday night, two men, named Smith and Milliah, were generating hydrogen gas for the lime light at the rear of the Theatre Koyal, when an. explosion occurred. Smith waa killed on the spot, and Milliah was badly injured. Both men were blown through the iron roof, a distance of twelve feet. The proprietors of the Argus have proceeded against a country journal for copying tfeuter's telegrams without permission. The case has been fully argued, and judgment is reserved. The decision wili finally decide the vexed question. The coffer dam at the new wharves on the south bank of the Yarra gave way with a fresh in the river. One hundred men have been thrown -out of employment. Miss Bolton has resigned her mathematical position in the Ladies' College to take a lucrative appointment at Christchurch.New Zealand, Professor Barton, of Trinity College, Cambridge, takes the methematical department. The liabilities of McEwan & Co., wholesale grocers, are £86,900, of which £58,000, owing to the Colonial Bank, is unsecured. At a meeting of creditors, the manager of the Bank declined to give any information, and the creditors resolved that the estate should be sequestrated.
