RIVERTON.

(from our own correspondent.) June 24. During the past week the J.P.s have had an extra pres?ure put upon them in their judicial capacity — three cases of drunkenness appearing on the rolls, together with oue of cruelty to a horse, in all of which convictions were obtained, and sentences passed as follows : — Anuie Crisp, for being drunk and using obscene language in a public thoroughfare, &c, was sent to gaol for one month without option of fine, in accordance with a promise made by said J.P.s upon her last introduction at court. Andrew Kunerl, a Prussian, after a similar formal presentation and hearing, was found guilty of being drunk and incapable in the public streets, whereby a large pane of glass, some four feet square, was reduced to yery small fractional parts ; the said Prussian having starboarded when he should have ported his helm. The lights having been up at the time, no oxcuse was left him for running foul, and he was therefore duly sentenced to pay the sums of 10a for hia excessive display of bad spirits, and 60a for the broken pane. — Eichard Mantin was, after this, indicted for being drunk and incapable upon "Wallacetown road, having been found all abroad by Constable Q-erin, and was let off with the nominal fine of 20s, this being his first offence. — William Andrews appeared to answer a charge of cruelty to a horse. The Bench, after hearing the case, imposed a fine of 20s, and 6s 6d costs, which were duly paid „__-

At Gummie's Bush, on Tuesday lait, the day appointed for the nomination of M.P.C. for Aparima district, in place of the late Mr Camming, considerable excitement prevailed, there being four candidates for the honors of the office — the names of the latter, with their proposers and seconders, being as follows : — James Mclntosh, proposed by Thomas Sutton, seconded by A. Gilchrist ; J. H. Menzies, proposed by Dr Hodgkinson, seconded by TV". H. Nurse ; W. A. Lyon, proposed by W. H. Menzies, seconded by H. Cassels ; J. Mclntyre, proposed by P. McNeil, seconded by James Turnbull. The usual hustings addresses having been made, and a show of hands demanded, the result was greatly in favor of Mr James Mclntosh, Mr Mclntyre claiming second honors, Mr Menzies third, and Mr Lyon fourth. As Mr Menzies has retired in favor of. the first named gentleman, little doubt as to the result of the polling (which takes place to-morrow, Friday) can be entertained. Mr Mcln tosh's strongly expressed views with regard to the abolition of provinces question, meeting with apparently general approval. He said that should abolition be the order of the day, then strike at the root of provincialism, and perform the operation in a thorough manner. He would, amongst other things, do away with the Upper House as it now exists, and create in its stead an elective one, which should be, under certain circumstances, dissoluble by the Governor. This, with other sweeping measures, in the event of there being no more Provincial Councils, &c. &c, found much favor with the constituency, and I repeat there can be no doubt that four o'clock to-morrow afternoon will see this gentleman at the head of the poll Mr H. Mayo, that spirited caterer of public amusements, is now paying Riverton a visit with, it may almost be said, the very best Troupe which has up to the present visited us. Owing to the short notice given of the Vivian Troupe's appearance, last night'B performance was not so crowdedly attended as it deserved, but this and to-morrow evening's entertainment will draw a good house.
