Councillor Rose moved as an amendment that as the request bad not come through the clerk of the committee it should be refused. This was seconded by Councillor Grarthwaite. Councillor Hall thought that it was hardly worth while to make any fues about the matter, inasmuch as he believed the gravel had already been taken. The Committee had probably presumed that the Council would not object. Councillor Garthwaite observed that there was too much irregular business of that sort going on. Eventually the motion was carried. A payment of £250, on the certificate of Mr Burwell, was passed to the contractor for the gasworks. It was resolved not to entertain a petition from residents of Appleby in reference to pathway in Tthan street, as the petitioners were not ratepayers within the Municipality. It was resolved that no more sand or gravel should be taken from section 21, block 4. In reply to Councillor Eose the Mayor stated that he had received no information from the Provincial Government touching a site for a Town Hall. With reference to a supply of young trees, Councillor Lumsden stated that he had been makiug enquiries on the subject in Dunedin, but he believed that it would be best to send the gardener thither in order that he might himself make a personal selection. Councillor Rose agreed with Councillor Lumsden, especially as the citizens intended to plant Dee and Tay streets with trees. He believed that Mr R. Powell was getting up a subscription for the purpose of planting Clyde street. Finally, the matter was referred to the Reserves Committee, to report at next meeting. The question of Tyne street was referred to the Public Works Committee, with an instruction to report at neit meeting. On the motion of Councillor Hall, seconded by Councillor Cleave, it was resolved to inform Mr Cuthbertson, M.H.JR. for the town, that the Council were preparing a Bill to amend the Invercargill Gas Loan Act, 1874, and to ask whether he would be kind enough to introduce and to take charge of it at tho ensuing session of Assembly.
