WINTON.

(FROM OTJR OWN COIIItESPONDENT.) At the first meeting of the committee of the Winton Land League, on the evening of the 3rd inst , Mr Pirie, the secretary, read the minutes of the public meeting, which were confirmed. Mr Pirie stated that he had forwarded copies of the resolutions to His Honor the Superintendent, the Provincial Secretary, the member of the Provincial Council for the district (J.Wilison, Esq.) and the Mayors of the various municipalities in the province. It was proposed by Mr Lindsay, seconded by Mr McLeod, and carried— That the secretary be directed to draw the attention of the Waste Land Board to clause 55 of the Land on Deferred Payments Act, in regard to the application of Mr Cuthbertson for land on run 165, Waiau district, such application having been made by an agent, contrary to the above - mentioned clause ; also to point out that block 31, Oreti Hundred, applisd for by Mr McPherson, is land of very superior quality, and Buch as vrould command a high price at auction. The committee reHolved to meet once a month ; but it it is to be a complete BUcceas— which I heartily wish it — I suggest more frequent meetings. Winton is a pretty township, and would be enjoyable to live in, even this season of the year, but for the mud. I am not long enough resident here to know the particulars of local helmßmanßhip, but this I know, that the piece of road, being about twenty chains, between the Post Office and Bchool house, is in a most disgraceful Btate — it ia literally more than ankle deep in slush and filth — and through this children have to wade four times a day, to the lasting ignominy of those who have the responsibility upon their

leather must be something far and above what would pay interest on a loan — if such be necessary — but the colds, coughs, and consequent suffering and incapacity for study which such a state of things engenders, is so superlatively important as to demand immediate attention. It is a singular thing that the road at the other end of the town — a road trodden by few save well-shod adults — is constantly and carefully repaired. I plead for the youngsters. With two trains a day each way between this place and Invercargill, it ia an odd fact that we have only one mail a day each way! A second mail would entail but small additional work, and would be a great public convenience. The approaching annual ploughing match, to be beld here on the 25th inst. in one of Mr Thomson's paddocks, promises to be a great success. The special train from your city, which ia I see to leave at 10.30, will I trust be well freighted, and if the weather be good, an enjoyable day will doubtless be spent. The want ot house accommodation is much felfc hereabouts. It would well repay some one of your Invercargill capitalists to invest in this direction. Ahw comfortable cottages would let easily. Winton, 21st June.
