Westpoet, March 2L. The s.s. Maori arrived this morning from Lyttelton, Dunedin, Biuff, and Sounds. Owing to a heavy south-west gale, after leaving Jackson's Bay, no communication could be held with Hokitika or Greymouth. The Maori was to return to Greymouth probably on the 22nd. She had on board fourteen passengers, principally tourists. Dtjnedtn, March 23. It rained hard last night. The weather was very cold and unpleasant, with prospects of rain. The town is crowded with people, who have come in for the racee. Pertobe was sold yesterday, with all engagements, for 155 guineas. The Maiden Plate was a splendid race. King Phillip made a bad start, but won by a neck. He could have won by any distance, as he came in hands down. King Phillip, 1 ; Hercules, 2 ; Daniel O'Rorke, 8. For the Dunedin Cup Traitor waa fancied on the course very much. He ran a bad third. Ngaro, the favorite in the betting, came in last. Castaway fell into a ditch and was out of the race. Earl of Lynne disappointed his backers. Hercules made the running from the start for Templeton, who came up in splendid style and won easily. The order of all the starters was — Templeton, 1 ; Eight Bower, 2 ; Traitor, 3 ; Atlas,4 ; Hercules, 5 ; Earl of Lynne, 6 ; Ngaro, 7. The following horses were scratched : —Pertobe, Tripolis, and Spritsail. Just before the start, Ngaro was the first favorite, and Templeton second favorite, Traitor being next in the betting. Templeton was the best conditioned horse on the course. There were heavy squalls while the Cup race was being run. Time, 4min. lOfsecs. For the Is ewmarkefc Stakes Wee Lad and Tadmore colt were scratched. Elfin Xing made the running, and won, close pressed by Spritsail, who was second, Bothwell third. Sonnambula made a bad start. For the Publicans' Handicap, Templeton and Tadmore were the favorites. Barwon led at the start, but was soon collared by TempletoD, who won easily, King Phillip second, Tadmore third. Spritsail, Verbena, Pertobe, aud Hercules were scratched. Templeton and his owner, Mr Delamain were loudly cheered after both the Cup and Publicans' Purse. The last of the correspondence regarding the Dunedin and Ocean Beach railway was published this morning. It is a letter from Mr B. C. Haggitt, Crown Solicitor, stating that as the Company have constructed works on laud of the Crown, below high water mark, the At-torney-General will commence proceedings if any attempt is made to recommence or use such works.
