Launcestojt, May 16. Several BaHarat capitalists, after visiting the Eingal district, leased from Mr Alexander Mackenzie the whole of the Evercreek estate, comrising nearly 5,000 acres, gfor mining purposes. They were very favorably impressed with the goldbearing indications at Fingal, considering the geological features of the country to be like those of Ballarat. Good accounts continue to come from the Nine-mile Springs. May 18. The cenaue returns show that; the increase of 9,000 in the population, was chiefly in the northern districts, only 2,000 out of the 9,000 being in the midland and southern portions of Tasmania. The Examiner publishes a list of mining and prospecting companies now in existence here to the number of 84. There is a great scarcity of labor on the ■ gold-fields. Good miners readily get £2 10s a week. May2o. * The silver lode at Penguin Creek, instead of being only two feet wide, is , found to be from eight to ten feet in ; width. The mining companies and the brokers ; intend agitating for an exemption of share transfers from the stamp djity. -
The steamer Tasmania, bound to Melbourne from Hobart Town, put in at Tamar Heads, from stress of weather. She had run short of coals. She leaves again to-morrow. May 21. The steamer Pioneer was wrecked at Circular Head during the easterly gale on Tuesday last. No lives were lost. The wreck is condemned. The steamer Tasmania got stuck in the river, and was towed off by the Derwent, and sailed for Hobaxt Town at 4 p.m. HoßAaT.TpjV^jyjjjj^i^. On Thursday night. an incendiary fire . occurred at Caver3wall, near Both well, by which a quantity of wheat, hay, oats, bran, and a winnowing machine, were destroyed.- : The first sheep which have ( been exported for some time are going by the City of Hobart on her present trip, j They are'some of Messrs Gibson and Taylor's merino ewes and rams and are certified as clean.
