Melancholy Death — Beechworth was pained and shocked on Sunday morning bv hearing that, consequent upon a buggy accident which took place the evening before, Mr Robert Watson, of the Bank of New South Wales, had died during the night. It appears tbat deceased, who had been playing cricket at the racecourse, left about six o'clock to return to town in a buggy, driven by M r James Spearing, barman at the Commercial Hotel. Shortly after leaving the racecourse, while coming down the Victoria Road, one trace came off the swiveltree, which being of course, pulled forward, striking at the same time against the horse's hock, re'eased the other trace also. The frightened animal then started at. a terrific pace, being nearlv out of the shafts, and dragging the buggy by the breechen straps. Unfortunately, a basket in front nf the driver prevented his using the usual foothold, but getttng his feet against the splash board he, with, great presence of mind, was bringing the buggy up to the horse by sheer strength on the bit, when the splash board broke, and he was pulled forward, a leg on each side of the off shaft, his shoulder being outside. He was here roughly used by the wheel, his shoulder and subsequently his feet being much hurt by the rapidly revolving spokes, but he at length fell out without, receiving anv serioas hurt. The liorse once move released, continued his pace, and swerved towards the fence: then Mr Watson, its only remaining occupant, fearing that it would be dashed to pieces against ! the rails, stood up nnd deliberately jumped 5... it intending to leap over the fence. Instead of effecting that object, he was hurled again=t the fence bodily, and with great violence, turned over once or twice, and then, in the words of Mr Winch--**, who was quite close, stretched himself out. He was at first perfectly insensible, blood coining from his nose and ears, but in about ten minutes rallied, and spoke somewhat confusedly, although he km-w what hail happened, and recognised some of those present. He afterwards walked to his holel with the assistance of two of his friends. Dr. Dempster, who saw him about seven o'clock, while he was still sensible and apparently in no danger, said he would call again before he went to b°'h whieh he did at about, 12 o'clock, when the df—eased was j totally unconscious. From tliat lime until -t | o'clock on Sunday morning, 'when In* expired, he j never rallied. — -Ovens and Murray A l:\rliscr, February 3.
