HOW TO FASHION A KNITTED CORD

In answer to a reader's request, the following instructions as to'how to make a knitted cord are given. This spring, fashion provides many uses for smart cords.

Sometimes they figure as belts to the new jumpers, fastened with smart little clasps in front. When .used as hat trimmings they end in tassels or in little metal acorns and they are often used as umbrella loops. It is quite easy to knit them. Use a pair of pointed steel knitting needles, and remember that they should be the same thickness as the thread you are about to work up. Two shades combined, produce a cord which has a pretty marled effect. Burnt orange, for instance, can be allied with oyster grey, electric blue with peacock green, and so on.

Holding the 'two threads together, cast on four stitches. Knit one row plain. Then pass the stitches to the other end of the needle, take the threads along the back, and start again ,at the first stitch, always knitting plain. Pass the stitches again to the •tker end of the needle, thread along back, and continue as before. After a few r%ws have been done the knitting forms a solid tube.
