METAL FOR SHANNON.

A PROMISING PROPOSITION. During the week-end a representative of the Shannon News visited the site at Mangaore which the Borough Council con template purchasing for a quarry, to enable them to have a supply of metal to meet their requirements in the; future. The site, which is only a short distance above the power house, starts from Mr Johnson’s boundary and, is about 20 chains, in length and two chains deep, taking jn tin: blul'f opposite the first passing point on the road from the powerhouse. The site lends itself admirably for a quarry, there being a basin m the Shannon side of' the bluff, going into the face -about half a chain and it is here that the crusher could be erected, while supplies can thus be brought to the crusher by gravitation. It would be hard to find a quarry- more conveniently situated for working than this one. An inspection was made oi the rock, which was found to be of solid formation to a height of SOft to- 100 ft and extending back a chain and a-half from the bluff point. Even allowing that the rock is all on the surface there should he sufficient to meet the Council’s requirements for some years. If the rock is down any depth, the quarry, from a commercial point, should then prove a big asset to the Council, as they will be able to sell metal lot outside -public bodies, who are constantly on the look-out for suitable road metal, and from the reports .that have been received there is no question -tnat this rock when crushed will produce some of the finest metal in the district. Should the Council purchase the site it is proposed to erect a light crusher, and the cost of this, together with the purchase q£ the land, other necessary machinery and the excavating, will be approximately £ISOO. The special committee that has been set up to deal with the matter are-making the fullest investigations as to its possibilities, before committing themselves, but after viewing it we feel convinced that the Council are on a sound business proposition. At tho last meeting of the Council the sum of £lO, was granted the committee to- enable them to have a, bore put down to ascertain the depth of the rock, but we understand the committee have decided to recommend t-o the Council that this money be spent in securing the opinion of the Engineer of the Wellington City Council, who has offered to make an inspection, and also that of .Mr G. L. Adkin, of Levirr, who is well acquainted with the geological formation of this country.
